I am using the AMSOIL 0W-20 diesel oil in my LZ0

AMSOIL does not pay GM to license its oils.

dexos began as an effort by GM to control the oil change market because the Quick Lube Industry was eating into dealer service department profits big time. So they attempted to get other oem’s to develop standards as well and that would make it hard for Quick Lubes to compete because all the oems would be different. GM faced lot of industry push-back, mostly the quick-lube industry and they went to licenses. Still GM it making a ton of money off the license structure as they charge a hefty fee to get oil tested, then require a royalty to use the dexos logo.

I can't find/see where it's Dexos D licensed. That's why I was asking the sales rep.

What Z45 said.  Amsoil tests to and exceeds Dexos but does not pay for the licensing.

I run Amsoil in my 2.7 Turbo, doesn't bother me one bit that its not a "licensed" oil.

I have used only AMSOIL since 1977, yes 1977, 48 yrs a loyal customer.  GM made enough selling me the SIerra, not going to give them the satisfaction of making $ of the brand oil I buy.

Does Amsoil have Dexos D licensed oils for our 3.0 diesels?

Hey, as stated above, AMSOIL isn’t on the official GM list as a licensed oil. It exceeds the specification.  I have been using AMSOIL in all our vehicles since 1999.

That's disappointing. For the price, it should be licensed. It can't be that expensive.

It’s very expensive and anytime the formula is changed as in to improve it you have to resubmit and pay again.

If there is another higher end Dexos D to consider, its Schaeffers - Advanced Light Duty Diesel Performance Engine Oil | Schaeffer Oil

Also doesn't appear to be a licensed oil, despite the verbiage on their website that it is "suitable" for use in GM vehicles that require Dexos D.

I'm sure it is "suitable" for use... ...in someone else's truck. 😆

You are overthinking the whole "licensed" thing.

There are plenty of mainstream brand name oils that aren't Dexos that exist.  Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Valvoline Restore and Protect to name a couple quick, yet both are great products, and it doesn't mean they can't be used.

If the oil meets GF6, upcoming GF7 for gas or CJ, CK, ACEA, whether it has Dexos on it or not, if it meets the SAE and API specs, its good to use.  GM via their Dexos specs actually led to many of those SAE and API changes along the way.

Some details from Lubrizol on Dexos 2 - GM dexos2

Dexos 2 was split into Dexos D and Dexos R but prior to the split, it was Dexos 2 which was a gas and light diesel oil spec.  The 2.8 Duramax ran on Dexos 2 spec.  Notice though what else Dexos 2 converged with in there?

"GM dexos2™ is usually coupled with a range of different combinations of other approvals depending on the viscosity grade of the lubricant, The most frequently seen approvals claimed in conjunction with GM dexos2™ being ACEA C3, BMW Longlife-04, Volkswagen 50500/50501, Porsche C30 or A40 (5W-40 only)"

Now, GM does go above specs like ACEA C3 for example with their criteria, so anything made to meet or exceed any of the Dexos specs (1 gen 3, Dexos D and Dexos R) would therefore be an acceptable oil, licensed or not.
