I’ve mentioned a few times I use my phone for everything. I’m using it now. It’s in my hand most of the day. In my vehicle I use the GPS, iHeart or pandora app. In my yard on the mower or yard work ear buds are in. As with my morning walk. About a month ago it started getting hot and quickly draining the battery. My ad blocker was still on as was my VPN. Battery is at 86 percent. I went to batteries plus to get a new battery installed, they were too busy so no go. Look up Amazon about a refurbished one but they only guarantee a 86 percent battery. I wasn’t quite ready to spring for a new one. Then all of the sudden they drop an 18.5 update. It’s like a new phone. No heat the battery lasts all day. The only thing I did after was eliminate a news app that found a way around my add blocker. Is there a way to keep this problem from coming back?

Whenever your iphone, or any computer-related object starts acting wonky or using more battery than normal, try rebooting it first.  Sometimes with the object oriented coded used to develop the operating system and the apps, some parts are left running when they shouldn't be.  Rebooting clears out the trash.  I think I read that it is recommended to reboot your phones once a week.  This helps it run at optimum performance and also clears out anything that could be "spying" on you.

I did that when the problem first developed. Is there a length of time to leave it off.

Are you doing a soft boot or hard boot?

A soft boot is when you turn the phone off via settings or by pressing buttons and moving the slider to turn it off.  A soft boot is does not clear out the memory, but just shuts the phone off.

A hard boot is when you press the up volume side key, then the down volume side key, then the screen button side key and hold this key until the apple logo appears.  This will clear out any running programs and temporary memory files.  Your phone will turn back on when it finishes rebooting.

I was referring to a hard boot when I said reboot.  Sorry if I didn't make this clear.

Here is an article from zdnet concerning iOS18 battery issues.  Some of these items could apply in your case.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/is-ios-18-tanking-your-iphone-battery-heres-why-and-what-you-can-do/

Item #4 in the article talks about checking for rouge apps using too much power.  Since you updated to 18.5, you probably can't check for any apps as your issue has been corrected.  But it's something to keep in mind if the issue reappears.

And as you noticed, sometimes an operating system update fixes prior battery issues.

My phone continues to work as new since the update. I almost traded it in. They aren’t cheep.
