WOW! I hit 5k once and I started to cringe. I just kept think shift dang it! Shaners- 5K when towing were you trying out for the Quaker State commercial. I don't just baby my truck compared to you guys I nurse, pamper and caress it, it's a wonder I don't pull it around. But you are a testiment to GM longevity

The 6.0L is an LS1 based motor. The 4L80 transmission is pretty low-shifting with the big torque converter and stock programming, but I think the motor could rev out to 6000rpm reliably no problem. You guys that are getting worried about the engine running up to 5k rpm towing a heavy load make me laugh. :D Keep good oil in it and warm it up before running it and then spank the sucker.

Like QUIKAG says, these newer ls1 motors will take alot of rpm. They have a pretty stout bottom end. Above 6000 i might get worried as the valvetrain on the trucks in not the same as the camaros or corvette. I will say after 5500 it does start to sounded very wicked. But i run it up that high at least every other day. I put my shift points at 5650 in first and 5850 in second.

My spec sheet for Model Year 2002 Sierra shows the 6.0L, "Maximum engine speed (RPM) -w/ manual transmission" as 5600 RPM and, ". . . w/automatic transmission" as 6000 RPM , with the following footnote reffering to the automatic tranmission versions. "Maximum RPM 5900 with optional Electronic Traction Control (ETC)."

Yeah, the only problem with rpm I can see would be the valve springs and possible valve float. Anything under 6000rpm, with some good oil and good operating temperatures, you could probably sit at 5000rpm for a long time with no ill effects on the motor.

I keep the LS1 in my '01 C5 above 4000rpm and close to 6000rpm for a long time at full throttle for 30 minute sessions when I'm roadracing. Oil temps get close to 300 degrees and the motor just sings all day long with the Mobil 1 synthetic.

These are stout motors, they like revs to build power.
