Does anyone know or have experience installing 20"-24" wheels on there trucks. I have an 04 Sierra Quadrasteer and want to put large wheels on it, but don't know how big I can go. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

20s are fine and you can keep the correct rolling circumference with a set of 275/45 or 285/45s. Goodyear make a cheap Eagle II at about $140 if you look around.

 

You should be able to get into a set of chrome 20s with tires for less than $1200 if you shop around online/ebay.

 

Some people put 305/50s on there which look good but it increases the rolling circ.

 

As for 22s, you will definitley have speedometer errors but 22s look really good. The tires are $$$ right now which is why I went for 20s. Somewhere around $250 each for Toyos. Plus, the Baltimore streets will rip up a set of 22s if you aren't careful - dunno where you live - since you will be rolling with 40 or 35 section rubber.

 

If you are going with chrome and live in a area that gets snow, you will want to keep your old rims/tires as road salt will rip chrome up very quick. What I did was get a set of snow tires for the original rims. I slap them on at first snow and just took them off this weekend.

 

24s are insane, look awesome but ruin the ride and you will ding them real easily in small potholes. Tires are beaucoup $$$

 

The GM 6 bolt pattern is such a popular one that you will have no problem finding rims.

 

I have seen pics on cardomain.com with Escalades/Subs/Tahoes with 26s so I guess it can be done.

You really wanna be careful when running any rim over 20" (IE 22-26)

 

You have a lot more mass on each wheel than before, and your braking will suffer drastically. There are upgrade kits out there to match the brakes to the rim's, but you are looking at 1500+ just for the front. But i would rather spend 1500-3000 on brakes than rear end some guy and have it be my fault after switching to a set of dubs

500-600$ for some replacement brake discs that will stop you a hella lot faster than the stock and you can still use stock pads if you want. Alot cheaper than the 3000$ alternitive.

20's = more weight and degraded acceleration. Im not too worried about either. I myself wouldnt go bigger than 20. Braking will get horrid. Ive had my wheels on for a long time and my brake pads are still nice and thick. Id stick to 275/45/20 on 20's. That way if you want to drop your truck you can. I got 285/50/20's and will be close to rubbing. Im dropping it anyway. I ran into a guy in KC that has 285/50/20's on a 2/4 drop and doesnt have any rubbing issues. AND hes running the same wheels I am!!!!!! Its all up to you!

I agree. I will say that I noticed absolutely no difference in braking after putting my 20s back on last weekend after 2 months of stock rims/tires.

 

On the warranty front, I would think that drivetrain issues could be challenged by GM if you're rolling around on 22s or 24s and your transmission fails.

20's are really the max for the stock brakes.. when you go any larger than that.. you sacrifce your braking. Will 20's cause a problem? Probably not.. when 22x10, or 26x10, with possible spinners? Yes without a doubt.

Hi -

 

If you're worried about wheel weight you can always go with an Mfg who offers a forged chrome wheel. I have the Centerline Edge 20's with 285/50's on the Escalade. The wheel and tire combo is lighter than stock by 4 pounds each.

 

People always caution others on wheel weight and the effects it has on braking...I can't recall reading a post about tire weight and its effect on the brakes. I wonder how much more a 285 BFG A/T on a stock rim weighs when compared to the stock M+S 245 or 265 - not to mention others that install aftermarket 16's with A/T 285's, 305's, etc. My 2500HD has 305's on 16" non-forged Centerline Hellcats...they must weigh a ton when compared to the stock wheel and 245's. :thumbs:

I have an 03 Sierra Denali and am running 22x10's all the way around with 305/40/22's they are great and I am still running in the 14's with them. haha

Have had 22X10 with 305/45/22s on my 01 2500HD for months now, no breaking issues of any kind thus far. Guessing yall are alluding to issues with light duty chasis.

It's not just a problem with weight, it's the increase in diameter that puts more leverage on the braking surface.

 

Think about trying to undo a frozen nut or bolt. The first thing we do is increase the length of the bar we are using to give more leverage and put more force on the item we are turning. This is what oversized rims do to your brakes and in effect lengthen yur braking distance. So your brakes become inefficient. Under normal driving you may not notice it. But, what about under emergency braking.

 

Scary!!! I just hope none of you guys with 20" and 22" are behind me when I have to brake in an emergency. My braking distance will be much shorter than yours and you'll rear end me......

I was watching tv the other day, discovery channel...and Jessy James was like see this...and he points to the aftermarket brakes with the big ass red thing behind the wheel...and says "this is how you tell if a truck is done right" because when you go with 20's or better you need to upgrade your brakes fool.

 

Stock brakes work dont get me wrong, but when your on the freeway going 65+ and have to stop because of a kid running in the middle of the road it makes the difference between saving a life, and creating some roadkill. :sigh:

 

I dont know about you guys...but after I get another set of 20's I am going to do the brake upgrade soon after. Thats the difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.

 

Look @ the information @ baer.com, same truck with 20's stock vs. baer brakes. Stock brakes stop you @ 164 feet, baer brakes stop the same truck @ 144 feet.

    • Enjoy the new truck, it’s a beauty. I’m glad you’re keeping the OBS, I love those old trucks. 
    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece. 
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
