Bluesman123 Posted February 29, 2004 Posted February 29, 2004 I have a 1991 Sonoma that I put a 1998 5.7L Vortec and 4L60E tranny in. With me and 20 gallons of gas it weighs 3260 pounds. I do not tow anything...just a daily driver. The engine/tranny came from a C1500 truck and was equipped with both an oil cooler for the engine and a tranny cooler. I removed the engine oil cooler and that worked fine. My question is can I also remove the tranny cooler? Can I just plug the 2 ports on the side of the tranny that the cooling lines connect to? Will this cause the tranny to overpressure or get damaged in any way? Is the 4L60E designed to require a cooler? Will I damage it by not running a cooler? Should I use any particular transmission fluid (I use Redline in the engine and the differential)? Thanks for all your help!! Dave
Rookie Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 You need to run a cooler of some sort. Most if not all auto trans that i know of have lines running into the radiator. This is for cooling. Heat kills a trans. Some trucks have an external cooler in addition to the the one in the radiator. i would keep the external on if i were you.
silverado4800 Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 What Rookie says, definitely keep the tranny cooler. Keeping it cool with extend the life of your 4L60. I plan on adding one to my truck on day....
Scott02Z71 Posted March 3, 2004 Posted March 3, 2004 Keep the cooler, the 4L60E is not the strongest tranny and the more heat is kept in there the more problems you will encounter. Scott
