If the news comes from YouTubers I won’t bother even watching. They get paid based on sensationalism and catchy titles.

Well, maybe, but the letter discussed seems legit to me. Anyway, I trust GM less than YouTubers on many thing

Well I'm glad I still have a cool Allison badge while all the suckers who buy after December will just get a plain ole GM transmission.

That was the very same thought I had, my truck will be "special" because it has an Allision badge on it 😆

The video of the youtuber "Automotive Inquiries" read off the official letter that as he put it sounds like it was written by lawyers and probably was, spelling out the end date of when the trucks will be allowed to have the Allison badging when built and then an end date to when any new trucks still on the lot come the end of June of 2026 I believe that were built in 2025 and have the badge on it, that the dealer must remove that badge and that GM can no longer use that Allison trade mark in their advertising . It comes across as rather harsh and final so its anyone's guess as to what transpired leading up to this action.

It also would be interesting if Allision had any input at all into the design aside from the use of their name to help upsell the truck based on past performance with a real Allison trans. This sure won't help out GM's position sales wise but how much it will hurt it, is a good question.

It says they cannot use Allison trademarks, nothing about the transmission which GM builds.

Not going to hurt there sales at all. I bet 98% of the people who buy these trucks with the Allison don't even know what a Allison transmission is.

Correct.  The licensing ends the end of this year, and they have until the end of June 2026 to purge out any advertising at all levels.  They will also re-badge inventory on the ground as well.

As for the transmission, it was never an Allison anyway.  Just name licensed/"tested" by Allison to market it as an Allison.  Otherwise the 10L1000 is a 100% GM transmission.

It’s all just marketing hype.

Good chance is all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.   They want more and GM won't give in?

GM kept the rights to build the 1000 trans when they sold away the Allison division circa 2007.  So its an Allison design done when GM owned Allison and only built by GM in its Toledo Plant.

10L1000 came way after that whole thing.  GM started to upgrade the Allison 1000 themselves starting with the LML release for 2011.  They then made more updates for 2017 and the addition of the L5P.

10L1000 loosely stems from the GM/Ford joint 10 speed project transmissions.  The gas 10 speeds were where most of the joint basis development happened, then each brand went their own routes for each models, and then the 10L1000 and 10R140 were made by their respective brands on their own and share the fact that they are 10 speeds and they use the same fluid otherwise have quite a lot of differences from each other.

Allison had nothing to do with the 10L100 transmission aside from testing, validation and branding it with their name via licensing.  It was all GM otherwise.

The press release from the announcement of the 10L1000 - Chevrolet to Offer 10-Speed, Fully Automatic Allison Branded Transmissions in 2020 Silverado Class 2/3 HD Trucks | Allison Transmission

"The Allison branded automatic transmission, manufactured by General Motors"

"By offering the new Allison 10-speed, tested and validated in partnership with Allison Transmission"

Actually the 1000 series was built in Baltimore.  That plant shutdown a few years back.  The 1K/2K transmissions are still made in Indy.  The Indy transmissions were never used in GM trucks.

What will happen sales wise I can't claim but I would say there is a tendency for those buying an HD truck to have more value based on what a certain brand has and a perceived trust ( or not ) with that name, with GM that is the Duramax name and the Allison name, with Ram its the Cummins name and now the 8 speed ZF trans, Ford its their own Power Stroke branding that has built up a following due to the years its been on the market establishing itself.

Right now I would be surprised if this rebadging won't affect some buyers decisions, a combination of the transmission not seeming to have panned out like one would have hoped for with the valve body issues and trucks sitting for months at dealers waiting on parts and then the Allison name being pulled can't help the psychological optics for those buyers who are paying attention. After all, GM didn't go through the motions and whatever was paid to Allison so GM could legally advertise the trans with the Allison name for no reason.

    • I understand that. The price is what it is, though. The price is what oil costs today, where our choices have led us, where supply is, and where demand is, in the market that is. Speculation is for futures, what we think the price will be, but with incomplete information at the time the price is forecast. I know you know this, but you appear to be intent on making a secondary point here about what you think the market could or should be, if only other choices.   In 1975 it became illegal to export US Crude. I'm conflicted on what the best answer is. Free markets allow export in pursuit of profit. But there is also a lot to gain by producing and consuming our own oil here. How do you reconcile it?
    • That sir is a choice. And even if it were not for all the reasons stated, this disruption has zero to do with the reality of the actual logistics and everything to do with the greed of SPECULATION. Spot price is irrelevant to reality.
    • What I think you're saying is there is supply here at home, and in Venezuela, and we could ease pricing if only it were favorable to do so.   Well, yes?   But that's not the current market. Supply isn't what could someday exist, if only, it's what producers are willing to produce and sell at a certain price point.   The national price of single family homes would come way down if we'd just slap together a few million homes this summer.   RAM and GPUs would get a lot cheaper if we just set up some factories to produce a bunch more and stopped using it to build out AI data centers.
