You really don’t have a clue. You just think you know. I have access to many vehicles in the field. New stuff. Diesel, gas all brands. If they use oil I would say it. No reason to say otherwise. No speculation real experience. I’m not brand loyal. I use what gives me service. It no simpler than that. If you’re using oil you’re doing something wrong or something went wrong in assembly. I just picked up a new super duty diesel last week. Five hundred fifty Horsepower. The sensation of speed was amazing. It was a fun ride on the back roads home. Of course you could say I’m making it up. I don’t care.

I don't think you're making up a story about driving a new Super Duty. I'm glad you think it's fast and fun. That's not the kind of vehicle I'd call fast and fun, but I do think they are nice trucks built for a specific purpose.

Excessive oil consumption is a problem. What is excessive? Manufacturers try to define it, although they err on their side to limit warranty and manufacturing costs.

Diesel engines burn oil. Gas engines burn oil. By design. And they burn more oil the harder they're worked How much? Over 5k-15k in a light duty pickup you might not notice the cup of oil the engine burns normally, or a couple of cups in a sump that holds a few gallons. On a semi, if you're adding a couple of quarts over 20k that's nothing on a sump that holds 15 gallons.

A whole quart in 3k on a 6.6L gas engine? Yeah, I'd consider that excessive if it were my truck. It has a relatively small sump (8 qt?) and 3k miles isn't very far.

I’ve had two vehicles use oil from new. 2500 miles add a qt. They said normal. Never got worse. All my vehicles including the heavy equipment I used never used a drop. Even the ones that live at redline running the implements. Maybe it was the Amsoil. It was too many to be luck. The Supper Duty has performance vehicle numbers. 0-60 5.5 seconds.

5.5 is quick for a 1-ton pickup.

Thats not fast for a modern performance car or EV.

Like so many other details you overlook, would you have really noticed a little oil gone on your fleet pickups?

Engines burn Amsoil too, it’s not immune 🤣

Intellectual elitism really needs to make a comeback. You've got retired chemical engineers oil from the oil industry here, an active GM tech who works on these things all day long, and other people telling you you're wrong. You came here asking for opinions.

But sure, trust your feelings on this one and keep pumping whatever Ford you owned in the past, that's helping establish your credibility on the issue. 🤡

Cant fix stupid

Are you naturally contrary? Or is it something else? Yea, having over 1000ft lbs of TQ is probably not much fun. And most vehicles claiming to be performance car are probably quicker than 5.5 to 60.🤣🤣 I must be extremely lucky to manage to go almost 60 years of driving with only two oil users. Because I sure drive them like I stole them. But enough for now. I feel like I’m talking to a last born who’s trying to keep up with the older brother. 😎

Some people just look at things differently. I have no reason to claim one thing if the reality is different. I still even retired have access to information from the family business. Why wouldn’t I? Oil usage isn’t a problem.

True, bought my first car in 1979 68 buick lasabre, burnt 1 qt every 100 miles. That motor was tired. Didnt matter how I drove it. Ive owned so many cars/trucks through the years and never had an oil burner since that old buick. Some people have to be right at all costs. I prefer clarity.

Well, I'm on a forum entirely dedicated to GM trucks 😆 Am I in the right place?

No, your oil consumption isn't normal. Yes, all engines consume oil - it's a question of how much. Do you have any other questions we can help you with?

  • Thanks 1

You have been weighed, measured and found wanting.  According to GM it is normal. So you disagree with your brand, finally got to the place of sanity. You have serious insecurity issues. .probably stems from neglect from childhood, or improper weening from the milk teat.

Always one JA on every forum.

    • Indeed a proper drain tap or drain valve with adapter that has a hose on it that opens up the valve as the adapter goes on is a slick setup and have that for certain highway tractors etc and other equipment that came from the factory with a tap but this L8T is pretty darned good other than me doing it on the floor and easy to touch hot exhaust and am not as agile as I used to be !. If I really want to pull a hot filter on an engine I will use an insulated set of thick neoprene gauntlet gloves but I am not in the hurry I used to need to be so things are done more relaxed and in theory somewhat safer ... I think LOL.    And as I mentioned the unique shape of the Amsoil 1 quart containers, while they might not work as well as an offset pour spout container for some awkward engine location applications, they are working a lot better with my Lisle funnel kit because of how they prop up on all four corners when upside down resting on the rim of the funnel where the typical quart container would never stay put without holding onto it.
    • Well, I just hit 100K a few weeks back, and I can honestly say I have not had any major issues with my '21 5.3 Crew cab.  I have done most routine maintenance, oil changes, air filter, tire rotations, and a transmission drain and filter change (not even a full flush).  A couple of months ago, I started experiencing the dreaded CLUNK when coming to a stop, sometimes hard enough to literally push the truck forward! After researching here and in other forums/youtube videos, etc, I was thinking it's the slip yoke. I finally had a chance to take it to my local mechanic today, and he was not able to recreate the issue.  Amazing, since it does it nearly every time I drive.  He also said he can't simply grease my slip yoke/driveshaft splines, because I have a 1 piece driveshaft.  I am not sure what else I can do.  Has anyone else had this issue or have any idea what else it could be?
    • This is where the Fumoto drain valve comes in handy.  No mess and able to change oil hot, like right off the interstate hot.  Flows nice and you can direct it into a container. As for the oil filter, I use an old dixie cup or plastic one from McDonalds. It contains the oil as you pull the filter down and not all over your hand.
    • Well, if it did change from lifters to rocker arms, at least it would be easier to fix as they fail.
    • Doesn't hurt to try.  It's my understanding that you have to run it at least 4 or 5 oil changes for things to get clean.  Think about it, your engine didn't get dirty in just an oil change so over time it will slowly clean. It's the safest way to do it and not have seal issues.      I remember  a product that came out a long time ago, AutoRX, it was an additive you put in the oil and then drove for 3k miles. Some saw improvements and some didn't. It was suggested to use a non synthetic with it at the time. Same observation, use a couple oil changes and give it time to work. It also stated it worked best if you could drive on trips to keep the oil hot.  I'm sure if you ask AI it could tell you all about it.
