Rear Bumper

Someone hit my wife's Subruban and damaged the bumper (two small dents in the bumper). My bodyshop says that they can repair/re-chrome the bumber for $400. Do you guys think a repaired/re-chromed bumper will look as good as a new one? If not, how much worse will it look?

 

Also, does anyone know how much a new factory bumper would be (part and estimated labor).

Wouldn't you love to find the guy who did this Anyway, two days after I first bought my 99 Silverado I parked at Wally World and came out to find someone had put a fist sized dent in my rear chrome bumper; looked like a reece hitch/trailer ball sized dent. (I learned to back into spaces at the edge of the lot and let the truck bed hang over the curb; those Silverados are LONG.) Anyway, I turned the accident into my insurance. I paid deductible, but I think the whole cost at that time was around $500 for a new bumper installed by the dealer. I remember the Silverado was so new it took a few days to get the bumper and I know GM was the only parts source. There might be a good aftermarket supplier available now that would have the part cheaper. Anyway, I'd look around at the price of a new bumper. $400 seems awfully close to what I got a new bumper for 5 years ago. Good luck hopefully this will be the last ding on your burb.

I was under the impression that a chrome bumper could not be repaired. $400 is INSANE too...a brand new one would cost you the same installed. Tell that guy to shove it...

 

I have purchased a factory bumper off of ebay before too...chrome was in perfect shape, but the black plastic got a little scuffed from the shipping, but if your black pads are still good you could use those. Check ebay, and don't get that bumper repaired...it probably won't look right anyways.

Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago, i know who did it and he is paying for it. so i went to my body shop and i was quoted $440 CDN for the install all they do is take the old one off take the plastic and the lights off and transfer it to the new one. part cost $295 CDN

 

Went to the dealer to do it myself complete bumper with plastic and lights and supports $450CDN. if you want just the chrome bumper without the plastic, are you ready $650CDN and then i went and he agreed that was crazy so i will get a new bumper from the body shop.

...except, the GM body shop will get the part from a local re-chrome place....

 

I got a front bumper, less all the plastic surrounding parts, from a local re-bender at half the $$ that GM wanted for it. AND, this thing was chromed inside and out. The one I took off the truck, after barely dinging it, (it was only 2 weeks old then) was rusted all to f*&% on the inside!!!!! (Probly saving Mr. & Mrs. GM money not chroming/+/- polishing the whole thing... half a dip??)

 

I wasn't so sure about replacing it myself after i picked it up, but after a couple of phone calls I found a dealership body guy that gave me a five minute over-the-fone description of how do it and it was so easy it wasn't even funny. The only time I needed an extra pair of hands was to hold the new 'clip' on to get the bolts started. A rear bumper is easier (still need to hold it up to put on 'tho... haha).

Being that the front i bought is el-perfecto straight, and chromed inside too, i am happier with it than the factory job.

I have been rear ended twice once in my old 00' and once in the new 03'. For the 00' I picked up one from a local junk yard that had a bunch of take off's form the cities bed conversions, cost $200 and it came with all the mounting brackets, plastic and wiring for the license plate lights. When the 03' was hit the guy that hit me asked to pay for it him self instead of using insurance we went down to the dealer and picked up a bumper that was packaged as a replacement kit (looked brand new to me chrome on the outside and painted on the inside) cost around $400. The kit came with all the mounting brackets and hardware, new plastic trim and new license plate light holders and harness but did not come with the bulbs. If you don’t buy the kit all the individual pieces are very expensive and not all dealers will mention that they sell a kit?? Install was easy as heck. All you need is someone to help with the initial installation and remember to leave everything loose until you have all bolts started.

I don't think our rear bumpers are chrome plated any more.

 

looks like a polished thin stainless steel insert. True chrome platting would have a mush deeper luster.

 

If the plastics surround is not damaged then all the body shops are doing is buying parts to replaced damages components and rebuilding. I bet my cold hard earned cash that they are buying the inserts from wrecking yards.

 

Once the metal inserts get dented or bent it's next to impossible to get them straight without any wrinkles or stretching the metal, even when you work it on a english wheel. Ever wad up a sheet of aluminum foil and then try to flatten back out and look like it just came off the roll?

 

 

True chrome plating would be very expensive, Call around at the few shops left that really do platting and the prices they quote are outragous!

I bought a bumper for my 2000 Silverado off ebay. It was scratched and the plastic parts were a mess. To top it off, it was the wrong bumper! Luckily I found a guy up the road that needed that particular bumper so I sold it to him and added money to that and bought a brand new one for the dealer. It was $329 out the door. Includes all brackets and bolts but no tag light bulbs or tag mounts?
