old trick for the TBI?

What would happen if i inverted the air cleaner cover on the throttle body engines?

I get about an inch and a half all around of direct air intake to hit my paper filter by simply flipping the cover over.... now although i won't run like this in the dust, I'm by passing that stupid flap over the exhaust manifold heat riser thing and eliminating the air box restriction~

i suppose i'm going to have to replace my $2 napa air filter more often, but i'm gaining more air over the stock set-up... yes, it's probably all warm air from the engine compartment but there is more total air going in... am I right?

any obvious drawbacks to this that you could throw at me? I watched speed tv and saw the open air filter style on the chevelle and i got crafty... the old cars did it on top of a carburetor, can i do it on a TBI?

I flipped the lid on my first truck when I was 16 a 95 4.3l sounded great. Loved that thing, no power though. My freind still has his 92 TBI and has an open filter on his, I think he just bought a 14incher from the local parts store. I would ask some of those guys.

You won't notice anything except the sound, no noticable power increase.

You run the chance of getting water or mud in the filter, or water through the filter....

i ran my ole 94 dakota like that for 6yrs--kinda gave it a little more (guts ) so to speak--replaced filter more often --but i think it did help some

My uncle flipped his lid on his old '92 5.7 that he used to pull the landscape trailer. No difference in power but the sound was pretty neat.

On my old 89' (305TBI, C1500)I did the following for about 4 years with no ill effects that I could ever come up with...

-Bought a K&N filter

-Drilled about 15 or 20, 1/4" holes in the back left side of the intake, looking at it from the front (metal donut part?, I can't decide what to call it... lol)

-Removed the Exhaust flap and all the associated crap in there, and duct taped that hole on the bottom that connects to the hose that goes down to the exhaust manifold. I live down in Mississippi where our winters are real mild.

-Removed the huge chunk of plastic behind the passenger headlight, to free up air flow.

It sounded one hell of a lot better, and I didn't notice the filter being any dirtier than normal when I cleaned it twice a year... When running Nitrous it seemed to help a whole lot too, a lot quicker for the power to "come on" when I sprayed (TBI plate dry set up)

I can't see how that would hurt anything the way you have it now.

thanks guys~ running it a little like this, I can't say that I notice a difference in the sound since straight pipes have me deaf already. I think I feel a little bit better throttle response, but it was fairly good before. Its gotta be pulling in all warm air but... quantity of the air vs. temp of the air is gonna start another argument here~

I'll switch it back and forth for highway/farm and winter/summer.....

I just realized I'm being cheap and not purchasing a different set up like a cold air or whatnot~
