Left side of instrument panel dying

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm posting this info for a friend who's having problems with his 96 Silverado. He said the instrument panel keeps dying. As in the gauges not working, for tach and what not. Then once this happens the auto transmission won't shift and the truck will become stuck in 3rd gear. The truck was taken to a shop and they replaced the instrument panel 3 times. Never solving the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's the electrical part of the ignition switch that needs replacement unless you find a loose connection at the fuse box at trans fuse or a problem at the transmission electrical connector. There is a TSB that covers 98 and newer trucks with the 4L60E but it happens on the older ones too. Find the white wire at the ignition switch harness(pink/white on some early models) and put 12v to it and see if things work. I have wired up relays to fix it using the pink wire from the ignition harness as the trigger-only wire that gets power during the same ignition switch positions as white, but the relay is needed because the wire and fuse will not handle the extra load

all work done under the dash. Bare a spot on one of the red wires(12v constant) and bare a spot on the pink, all wires are part of the ignition switch harness, cut the white wire in two. For the relay post 86 goes to ground, post 85 gets connected to the bared pink wire, post 30 gets connected to the cut white wire running away from the ignition switch, post 87a(if its not on relay just tape up the white wire on the switch side of the cut)to the white wire ignition side, and post 87 gets connected to a 10 amp fuse and then to the bared red wire

100% agreement with Jeremy...

Ignition Switch in steering column.

Don't even have to take the steering wheel off to replace it.

Jeremy added a way to fix it without R&R the switch. If you don't like his way, just R&R the ignition switch.

GUYS....Also remember there is a fuse (#15 or 17? sorta forgot)

that controls the trans. shift and speedo and odo operation.

It is in the dash side fuse box in the OBS trucks.

It is clearly marked speedo/odo .................................

If this fuse blows you have NO odo/speedo and no 1st

gear only 2nd and 3rd and it won't shift either !

What is the correlation between the transmission not shifting properly and the speedo or dash indicators not working ???

The sensors that drive the tranny logic and the guages are both fed from the same circuit. Putting the truck in third is a limp home mode for when the ECM cannot figure out what else to do.

My 98' Z-71, 50Kmiles, won't shift out of 1st gear, after I start up...and the speedo won't work. This has happened 2X, then works fine afterward ?? Is this the same problem (VSS)except I'm not driving down the road (3rd gear)? Fuses OK...Thanks.

I don't mean to steal your post Braz but I am having the same problems. I have a 1994 K2500 that won't shift pass 2nd and the gauges are acting up. It doesn't do it all the time but I did buy an ignition starter switch to install in the colomn. 02 Silverado Z71 you said that you don't need to remove the steering wheel to replace this switch. Where is the switch located and how do I go about replacing it?

Well I located the switch. Does anybody know the trick to removing it from the colmn?

I got it out and replaced the switch. It fixed my transmission and gauge problems. Thanks Jeremy!

Safe mode is second gear not third. When transmission is working correctly you can start out in second by shifting to 2nd before starting to move. Works real well on snow or ice.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
