2008 Silverado

I just got done reading an article on MSNBC.com about the best trucks on the road right now.

In the article, the writer asks a GM Exec if they think Ford went too far with the "luxurious interior of the Lariat F150"... he said "No, in fact, they didn't go far enough. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you see our new from the ground up 2008 Silverado."

So.... in reading that, has anyone heard any details or are there any Test Mule pics out on the net yet?

Post em if ya got em

2008? everything i had heard said that 2006 model year would be the all new silverado.

found the article - http://www.forbes.com/vehicles/2004/05/24/...l_0524feat.html

it says that the whole line of full size truck will be all new by the year 2008, not in 2008.

(from the article)

"Asked in March if he thought Ford went too far by putting what is essentially a luxury interior on its flagship F-150 Lariat pickup, Gary White, GM's vehicle line executive for full-size trucks, said, "We don't think they went far enough. I think you will be shocked when you see what the interiors are going to look like on our next full-size trucks."

The upcoming round of trucks to which White referred is an enormous project for GM. Before 2008, the company plans to redo its entire full-size truck portfolio--pickups and sport utilities. Everything will be new on the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon and all other full-size GM trucks and SUVs."

The one thing that scares me about the '05 trucks, is the "displacement-on-demand" technology. This design failed miserably on the old Caddy's (remember the 8-6-4?) Hopefully they have it figured out right... I think it would be OK for a person that uses their truck for a car, but I really wonder about it for the people that work their trucks.

:flag: I would give that a year or 2 just to see how it does. But then again there won't be a new haulin truck around here for another 10 or so years.

shaners they had it on car and driver a year ago. That czar guy test drone a truck with it and actually loved it. He always rates trucks low but he had high remarks for the truck. They did about a 15 min piece on it. He said he couldnt even tell there was a power difference when it switched to 4 cylinders and when he hit the gas it took off.

The thing that scares me is the price. We will wait and see

Just found this story on DOD

Coming Changes in GM Vehicles - More than Skin Deep, a Revolution Under the Hood

Oshawa, Ontario (Friday, December 5, 2003) - If there's one thing we can count on from the auto industry every year, it's change - new models, updated looks, whole new categories, and new options. Often, those changes are cosmetic in the form of new shapes, colors, trim, and the like.

But just as often, the new year brings changes that can't be so readily seen, such as improvements in the powertrain. And in the next few years, GM's offerings will feature some remarkable powertrain changes - in addition to the usual external changes.

Take, for instance, the old reliable internal combustion gasoline engine. Beginning next year with the 2005 models, a number of GM models will be offered with Displacement on Demand. This unique option will provide a common-sense alternative to conventional gas engines. It saves fuel by using only half of the engine's cylinders during most driving conditions, and seamlessly reactivates the other cylinders when the driver demands full power for quick acceleration or load hauling. As a result, Displacement on Demand will give the driver better fuel economy and lower operating costs.

Displacement on Demand will debut on selected 2006 model year vehicles. By 2008, GM will equip more than 2 million vehicles annually with Displacement on Demand.

Meanwhile, GM will be phasing in the hybrid gas-electric system, a fuel-saving powertrain option. In the spring of 2006, the Saturn VUE, and in 2007, the Chevrolet Malibu will get GM's Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) hybrid system coupled to a CVT, which will get an estimated fuel-economy improvement of 12-15 percent.

Mid-year in 2007 and soon after in comparably sized pickup trucks, GM's full-size SUVs will be offered with the Advanced Hybrid System II mated to a Vortec 5300 V-8 with Displacement on Demand. This combination will achieve a 25-35 percent fuel-economy improvement.

These changes are just the beginning of what will be a revolution in powertrain development. Various estimates suggest that by 2020, the conventional gasoline engine will be well on its way to being phased out, replaced ultimately by hydrogen-driven fuel cell systems.

GM is well down the road in its development of the hydrogen fuel cell, evidenced by the publicity surrounding our rollout of the AUTOnomy concept vehicle. In truth, the technology is nearly ready, but the infrastructure to support these clean-burning powertrains is not. Much work and research remains to be done to develop and establish clean, efficient production of hydrogen, and safe, inexpensive distribution.

GMINSIDENEWS futures roadmap show the Silverado/Sierra new models 2006 with the SUV 2008. So that would put the HD's around 2007.

2006 the Escalade SUV's get a V12

I'm actually eager to see the introduction of displacement-on-demand on these trucks. Caddy usually takes a first shot at the fancy stuff for the rest of the GM family. So hopefully they learned a thing or two.

I wouldn't run out and get a 2008 truck - first model year changeover is usually prone to recalls. I liked the new body style of trucks/suvs from 01 - but waited until the model line matured a little.

The new Silverado is due out fall of 2005 as a 2006 model. It will have a lot of similarites to the Cheyenne show truck. This is pretty much all I can say without getting into trouble. As for DOD, I am looking forward to this. I was fortunate enough to be able to drive one of the test mules recently. The disasterous V8-6-4 that was in the Caddies in the early '80's were controlled by mechanicals. Too many moving parts to break. The new version is controlled using electronics. It is a much simpler system. The power is seamless. Besides GM is not the only ones introducing this techology. Chrysler will have it on the Hemi in the 300C and Honda is putting out their own version.
