Sudden Death

I have been driving my 1993 GMC 4WD 3/4 Ton Surburban with 454 since new.

It died on me for the first time the other day and I don't have any idea where to start.

It was loaded up pretty full and pulling a small cargo trailer about 2500 pounds.

I was pulling a long grade, several miles, and pushing it pretty hard in third gear to hold a decent speed. It was warm out, not hot, ( 80 ) and the factory gauge was around the 3/4 quarter mark- higher than I have ever seen it but not in the red zone.

Whed we reached the top I put it in 4th and eased off and it took me a second to realize that the motor had died. No lights on the dash,oil, check engine etc.

Luckily there was an off ramp and I put it in neutral and coasted off the freeway.

I noticed the dash lights were on but no check engine light.

The truck started right up and I have not had a problem since.

Any ideas? Should I worry about it more than I am or could ther be a simple explanation ?

We made it to our destination, the middle of nowhere. There are no services for 50 miles.

Maybe a vapor lock in the fuel system somewhere... (just a guess)

I remember vapor lock as a problem with carburated vehicles. I fixed my motorhome problem by adding an electric fuel pump.

I thought that since all fuel injected motors were under pressure this would not happen anymore.

Is it still possible to get vapor lock?

Just a guess, pulling up hill using lots of gas, maybe a dirty fuel filter couldn't keep up with the flow. Coasting after got the fuel flowing agian.

I'm guessing that your ignition module is on its way out. May have starved it of fuel and then vapor locked what little was in the line after the filter.
