Why doesn't the Steering wheel lock?

I have read on a couple of forums that the steering wheels don't lock anymore when the truck is in park. I couldn't believe it but sure enough  mine doesn't lock.

Anyone have any idea why this was changed? What about towing? I would never have my truck towed by anything other than a roll back but I was just thinking about some poor wrecker driver not knowing and having a ####ing mess on the highway when the wheels turn while being towed.

I have a 2000 Z71 and I know for sure mine locks because I do it every time, especially at night.  But I have a friend at work with a 2001 and his does not lock. Go figure!

That may have been one of the many cost saving 'features'

Like losing the tabs that go aruond the key in the ignition, glove box door locks, etc...

My 2002 doesn't lock.

My buddies' 2001 silverado doesn't either.

My '03 has no locks. It makes it nice for doing the front brakes or any front steering/suspension work. You just lift the front off the ground and the wheels turn real easy. I think GM figured that since they have other anti-theft measures like 'Theftlock' and the system that honks the horn if the remote isn't used, they could do without the ignition lock. Oh, most wrecker drivers don't trust the steering lock anyway. They'll usually strap the steering wheel in place somehow.
