Warranty Question

Recommended Posts

I have a 02 Silverado with 20K miles and only use it a weekend vehicle. The factory warranty will expire in October 2004 and I was wondering if the extended warranty that some places offer is really worth it.

The only 'real' problem that I have had is the rattling steering column issue that I had fixed a while ago. With all of the electronics in new cars and trucks these days, I am somewhat cautious of not being able to fix a problem.

Any advice and extended warranty companies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Good question. I just purchased a 2004 Suburban and did not take the dealer up on their "generous" warranty offer. I'm shopping around so any advice would be helpful.

CHRIS.......Check out http://www.gmoutlet.com aka Black GM sales

Very aggressive pricing.

1 smoked ABS computer, tranny, etc..............Made your money back!

Genuine GMPP warranty, priced right.

Partial refund if not used also !

Too many 3rd party warranty companies either folding up, not covering

certain repairs, use of used or junkyard parts.

I got burned once by a aftermarket company.....

.....GM ain't gonna go anywhere soon.........

Check out http://www.edmunds.com in the forums under smart shopper heading.

LOTS of horror stories...... ......................geo

Extended warrantys seem to be very expensive!

The dealer wanted like over $2000 to do mine. I said no way!

For that, I could put a tranny in it or almost a motor.

Something major, big time would have to go wrong.

I don't really think its worth it.

i bought a gmpp for my truck (5/100k) and it turned out to be worth it. it was slightly more expensive than some of the aftermarket ones that are out there, but I just didnt have confidence in the aftermarket companies.

my service guy at the dealer told me that they have been screwed so many times by these aftermarket places that they now require the customer to pay for the repairs and let them worry about getting reimbursed from the warranty company...

i never had any sort of hassle with the gmpp. it is an excellent warranty.

I have a 6 year GMPP plan on my 2000 K3500 (zero deductable) that is good until Dec 05 and it cost me $850. (it only has 26,500 miles on it now). I got mine because it is a snowplow truck and I need to have a front wheel bearings looked at before next season (gland nut on axle keeps workin lose after tightning with plow mounted) so it was a good value for me. Personally I would not use a after market one. GMPP also covers a rental if repairs take more than 4 hrs too and is tranferable also if you sell it. The place I bought my truck at was pretty cool about it and sells them $50 over cost because it drums them up extra service and they have alway given me a new truck to drive when I take mine in for any reason.

We learned our less when Warranty Gold went under. Luckily we got our money back from the Credit Card co.

I would only buy a CNA extended warranty (owned by CNA) or GMPP.

Like silversub, I passed on the GMPP when I bought my truck.

Those of you that did go for the GMPP, two questions :

1. What pricing/length of coverage did you go for?

2. Did you buy at vehicle purchase or later on?

I bought a gmpp at about 34k.....I got a 3/54k for somewhere around 3 grand I think, I can't remember off hand. I guess the way I look at it....if the AC goes or something with the ABS it's almost paid for. Also I can't wait till I move to NC, I'll have to get it inspected, and there's no way it'll pass with the parking break acting the way it does.....and I know for d**n sure they're gonna fix it.

I bought a GMPP extended warranty (3 yrs/75,000 miles) at date of purchase (0 deductible) on a 2003 Chevy Suburban and paid $1,250. I have been quoted a price of $1,280 for a GMPP extended warranty for 5yrs/90,000 miles (0 deductible) on a 2004 GMC Envoy and will buy this within 1 year of the purchase date. Hope this helps. I didn't do any shopping around for either quote (may be obvious) and both were from the dealer where I bought the vehicle.

With the miles you drive I would not get it.

I had a 00 Ext Cab had 105,000 miles in 3 years and the only problem was a power window which I screw around with ice on the window..These thing are built like tanks. My 03 4 EXTZ71 after 6 months 12,000 miles I am getting the valves work on today ( under warrenty) the only thing problem.

Just doing everyday maintence and you should have a problem.

The only extendary warrenty I every bought was for a 99 Caddy STS last October because it was used. IT was a GM warrenty

I had an extended warranty on a Blazer I had that wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. When my motor went they said it was "worn out" and that didn't qualify. I guess if it exploded instead that would be covered. I plan on getting a GMPP from Blake, later this year. You know GM will be around to honor it and you can take it to any dealer and get factory parts instead of who knows what. I know they are not cheap but neither are the parts for these trucks..

i bought mine at around 35k. i got the 5/100k for $1700. i called probably 20 different dealerships (any gm dealership can sell it to you, even if they dont sell chevy/gmc) and got a WIDE range of prices - from $1700 to $3500 for the same warranty. this was 3 years ago...

There is a lot of markup in them by some dealers, just shop around some. You have until factory warranty runs out to get one. If I replace my plow truck again sometime I will get GMPP again for it and from same dealer as they have been good to me I must say.
