I am looking for a newer truck, currently own a 1983 4x4 chevy. I have found a couple one is a 98 GMC ex cab. Very nice truck obs. The other is a 99 chevy nbs truck. The 98 with cloth and 105,000 miles can be bought for around $10,000 and the 99 with 97,000 miles, is an LT loaded and can be had for $12,500. What are everyones feelings on the nbs VS. obs? Thanks for any and all input.

With good maintenance records there is nothing wrong with the '99. However keep in mind that it was a new model truck, and there have been a few issues with it's introduction... Maintenance records will show if it's been taken care of.

The '98 has been proven and if you like the OBS and if the truck is clean, then I wouldn't be afraid of it at all...

I own a '93 1500 RCLB with a 5.7 and a 2000 ECSB with a 5.3. Seems like two completely different vehicles. To me, the '93 feels substantial, like a solid truck. The 2000 is very comfortable, almost car-like. Comfy and quiet. Both are lowered. I guess, what I'm trying to say is, if I was going to get a load of mulch, I'd take the '93. For long distance traveling, the 2000 is the winner. I guess, a lot of the answer rests in what you are going to use the truck for.

It's really hard to compare the two so this is probably no help at all. Oh yeah, both of them are currently for sale. I think I want another dually... Mike

A friend of mine has a 2000 GMC half ton with the 5.3L and when they get in my 98 with the 5.7L They wonder why theres doesn't move as well. Both are 2WD by the way. As for comfort my 98 is just as comfortable to me as the 2000 GMC.

 How are you doing ? Well I read your post and remembered I had a BUY // DONT BUY list from Consumer Reports.org. They have the 19 99 on the don't buy list and the 1998 is on the Buy list , face it there are good ones , and bad ones , in every year // every make . Just make sure you don't buy something made on Monday or Friday. Good Luck

98 OBS - pretty much echoing the same sentiments here.

I would prefer getting a truck in the middle or end of the major model run. So a 98 OBS is going to be a more thought out setup than a first year of the NBS.

Don't get me wrong, I like my truck, but I think GM sometimes uses their consumers as guinea pigs. Last year of the run is probably the least buggy. But I'm sure there are plenty of people that love their trouble-free 99s.

Actually the 2000 OBS are the classics. Only in 2500/3500 series though. Mine was made in 01/2000.

The 99 1500's OBS were available only in Extended Cab Short Box with third door.

I'd go with the NBS for the following reasons:

Great rear brake set-up (especially the e-brake)

Nice drive shaft noise (lets you know when your accelerating)

Nice steering shaft play (reminds you that you have your hands on the wheel)

Erratic fuel gauge (gives you something to look at while driving down the road)

Sticky throttle (reminds you to clean your throttle body occasionaly)

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of now. Of course, if you'd rather have a truck without all of these great features, you can buy the OBS.

Actually, no.

the 99's came in both body styles.

Hence the emblem on those trucks "Classic 1500"

Not sure what you mean.

I know the 99's were available in both New and Old body styles. But the 99 OBS 1500 was only produced in the Extended Cab Short Box with third door configuration - according to GM's literature.

The 2000 OBS were only in 2500(8600 lb GVWR only)/3500 series. No "CLASSIC" emblem on my truck.
