Replacing Power Steering Pump

Recommended Posts

Hey -- It's not often that I'm in a position to help people out on this site. Since I'm a bit of a novice shade-tree mechanic, I get more advice than I give. However, after a long process, I finally just finished replacing my power steering pump, pulley and belt tensioner, so if anyone has any questions, I might be able to help you out.

Good stuff....Doesn't it feel good when you do something like that yourself and you save some money....I too consider myself a wanna be shady mechanic...but I'm learning. The other day I had my first experience with an impact wrench.....I had a smile on my face the rest of the day....those things are cool

He he.. yeah, good pick up.  I forgot the F-bracket, but hey, hopefully I can tell you something about replacing the P/S pump anyway... :D

Don't know if you'll read this so late after the post, but I need to replace my pump.

Apparently there are two pumps available on my 2000 Sierra and you have to pretty much take the old one off to get the code so you know which one to replace.

Did you have this problem and is there any way to see the code with a flashlight so the truck isn't down until I can get the replacement pump?

I'm also interested in how you knew the pump went bad. My power steering pump has been making a noise and vibration similar to what you feel when the fluid is low. I've checked the fluid and it's fine. The dealer said it might be the power steering pump actuator valve (whatever that is). They couldn't identify the part number for just the valve so they recommended replacing the entire pump for $700. I declined and have driven it for 6 mos.

The sensation and noise comes and goes and regardless, the steering has not been affected, i.e. not harder to turn, etc. Hopefully it won't completely fail but I'm curious to know what the problem is or if you experienced anything similar.

My pump groans and is a little difficult to turn at times - especially when the truck is stopped or moving slow (which is when I actually need the power steering to work).

Looks like I was mistaken on the pump - there are two designs for the RWD trucks, but only one for the 4wd.

ACDelco P/N 36517152 looks like the model for mine.

Its $132.79 from www.rockauto.com and you get $70 back for core.

I too am curious how you knew yours went bad. Today after putting on my winter tires (need to do it earlier and not wait until December when it is 20 degrees out) I pulled my truck in the garage and whenever I turned the wheel it made all kinds of noise. Went for a drive and pulled back in the garage wasnt as bad but still noticable. it could be that the temps being so cold caused this? Fluid level is fine.

Thanks!

Your issue may be related to the pump valve vs. the entire pump.

I am going to change the pressure control valve. Could you PM me on the pump change process? It looks like I will have to take the whole pump out to get to the valve, unless I can twist my arm like a pretzel. Another disadvantage is the DMax. It completely fills up the underhood space, so the back of the pump is barely visible. It is going to be fun.

I need to replace my power steering pump on my 2000 suburban. Looks like it's leaking out the front shaft and dripping down. You have the process?

This is an interesting topic. Some time ago i complained about intermittent whining noise in my truck. It is not that loud and it comes and goes, sometimes it does not return for weeks. I am convinced now that the noise is coming from the power steering pump. I have eliminated the transmission, A/C compressor, belt idler pulley, belt tensioner, and alternator as the source, which leaves the water pump and the power steering pump. And I never heard of a water pump making noise like this. Which leaves the power steering pump.

Is there a service bulletin that describes the power steering pump noise? It could be that pressure control valve. How difficult is it to replace that valve? Do you need to disassemble the pump to replace it? I imagine that the dealer would probably replace the whole pump under warranty.

This problem must be pretty common in GM trucks. The other day a Traiblazer drove by at maybe 25 MPH and it was making a whining noise like you would not believe. Similar to the noise my truck makes occassionally, but much more intense
