crazy gauges

92 chevy 1500 always seemed to have a wierd electrical problem. well now it a real problem, while driving at any speed out of the blue the speedo will start jumping around then the car will seem to shut down what i mean by that is its like when you put your key in the ignition a turn it one click where the buzzer comes on, all gage lights light up (check engine, brake, low fuel). anyone ever seen this?

Could be a worn ignition switch. (power loss - dash diagnostics/reset that is)

When you say it shuts down, does that mean the engine dies also?

 

Reason being, I just recently saw a very similar problem with an '02 2500 HD with the 8.1. The truck would be cruising along down the highway and then the gauges would all act goofy and then seemingly ALL power to the vehicle would be lost , yet the engine would still stay running just about long enough to pull over and start slowing down, and then sputter and die. The problem ended up being the wiring harness connector for the fuel sending unit atop the fuel tank. It was causing a short in the entire electrical system and then of course would quit sending fuel to the engine. Not sure that this'll have anything to do with your truck, and I realize we're talking about trucks 10 years apart...but, maybe it's an idea!

You weren't by any chance going 88mph were you? I've heard of this same problem before you may have a faulty flux capacitor. Don't make em like they used to.
