stock shocks

How do you know if the stock shocks are worn. I've got 73,000mi. on the silverado. All highway miles. Took the rig in for front end alignment today and guy said slight cupping on tires indicating shocks starting to go. He said he could get me a set of monroe reflex shocks for $349 installed. Couldnt tell if he was just trying to sell me some shocks or if mine really are bad.

The shocks on my '01 HD were shot at 25k. Yours are probably toast, but regardless you will not regret upgrading to the Reflex shock.

$349 installed? Id say save $150 and do it yourself. its an easy job

I changed my at 165,00 miles. Made a difference. I bought monroe's at sears on sale for $12.00 apiece and installed them my self. A very easy project.

#1--Change 'em. At 73,000 miles you'll think you died and bought a new truck. (I'm even thinking of changing mine to the Reflex and I'm only at 15,000 miles)

#2--If at all possible, do the work yourself. Shocks are incredibly easy to swap out. You'll save a bundle.

My shocks on my HD are 3 years old and only have 17K miles on them, but to me they feel like they are about worn out... I'm noticing some rear wheel hop, and a little more bounce in the front end.

 

I think I may have to change mine out too... I just need to find a good HD shock that doesn't sacrifice ride too much. I've run the Edelbrock shocks before, and was happy with them.

Has anyone tried the Reflex and then gone with the Sensatrack?? What are the major differences? The way I understand it the Sensatracks are more for a road use. Anyone?? Buhler??

Briefly, what is involved in changing shocks for a 2000 Silverado 2WD?

i'm a novice mechanic and i did my shocks myself -- not too hard if you have a jack and jack stands. my OEM shocks were leaking by 30K miles. I went with the Bilstein HDs and love them. a bit stiffer ride, but i like that.

 

basically, for the fronts, you just unbolt the old ones, compress the new ones with your hands, and re-bolt them.

 

i think in the back (i have a yukon with the coil spring suspension) i may have had to remove a cross bar or something, but I can't remember if that was to replace the shocks or when i replaced my springs (when i went to bilsteins, i also had to get the HD bilstein springs to keep the rear at the same ride height).

 

a pretty easy job, though. i can maybe scan and send you the instructions from my Haynes manual if you want. just e-mail me or PM me if you want it.
