Under Hood Engine Lights

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I noticed that the '03's and up don't have an engine light. Has anyone come up with a mod for this?

Just go to the dealer and buy one. Typically about $10.00. You'll probably have to craft your own wiring. The light snaps directly into mounting holes that are in the hood.

I did this over a year ago. Looks good. It works. Then it occured to me.......... why do I need it? Nothing I could fix if anything broke in the middle of the night.

Your absolutely correct. But I'd like it just incase I blow a fuse or something.

That's what flashlights are for.

True, but then I am inconvienienced by holding a flashlight in one hand or shoulder, mouth, under the chin, or in my arm pit. Did I miss any?

I miss mine. was it my 95 GMC Z71 or my 01 k1500 that had one that you could pull out the wires and use it like a mini shop light. then it reeled back in with a little crank thing. think it was the 95.

The main reason that hood lights have been deleted is due legislation over the mercury switches that are used for this application

I don't think they are mercury, at least not on my '99. It has a metal rocker piece that rolls over and completes the circuit when the hood is opened. I know that for a fact because I had mine apart putting a little grease in there because it wasn't rolling over all the way to turn the light on.

Main reason:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

No hood light

No glove box light.

But now I have an AUX power outlet in the rear of the console :seeya:
