Power Window problems

My power window on the drivers side went down today but now it won't go back up!

If I press the toggle for the window to go up it just makes a clicking noise and the window just sits there. The passenger side window works fine. I removed the plastic cover over the switches and there are no loose wires where the button is, so the problem appears to be somewhere else. I am just in the process of taking off my door panels, any help is appreciated.

My trucks is a 1999 new style ext cab

Sounds like the regulator is shot.

I had a glass company do it for $283.50 last year.

I would suggest ordering through a discount dealer such as 1stchevyparts.com if you are doing it yourself.

your motor is probably shot, or your wires that work the pully system are shot, or one of the brackets has come undone.

Go on to eBay and look up window assemblies for your truck, brand new will run you $60. Your Parts Store from Texas has great customer service, reasonably shipping, and a quality product. I had to buy one for my passenger and drivers side now (so i would order two if were you). they work better than OEM, IMO.

when it happened to mine, part of my window was still up, so i grabbed it and pulled up while pushing the button, it helped it along for a week until my parts came in.

If you take the door panel off you can see pretty easily how the whole assembly works.

I have a 99' 1/2 ton ext cab shorty new body style too, mine happened at 120,000 miles.

check them out, they have drivers side too.

my install time was only 30-60 minutes. take your time and you won't break anything. the doors come off in an upward fashion.

To quickly test it out, unplug the motor and jump across the connector (harness side) with a volt meter. There should be 12 volts when you press the switch in either direction. If so, the motor is shot, if not, the problem is in the switch or circuit. You can actually use a test light for this since it isn't a sensitive low current circuit.

chances are once you get the door off you will see that the brackets have come loose or the wires have tangled. in which case the $60 is worth it. I had fixed one, rerouted the wire and everything just to find that a perfectly functioning motor was eating the wire inside of it.

WOW! Thanks for all the replies.

Got the door off and had a look. Nothing looked wrong, so I just unplugged and reconnected the wires at the motor. That seemd to work, although I notice when the window goes up in makes a squeeling sound like it is rubbing on something. Right now the window is up so I leave it like that. I will take a better look on the weekend when I have more time and it is still daylight.

dustin07: tranny seems ok I have a larger tires on and I did the fluid around 50000kms ago. I had Westers adjust the tranny for the tires so far it has been ok. 25000kms with the tires and 20000 with the westers. Are you having tranny issues?

I just changed mine this week (broke the window in the process... make sure the rubber piece is in the clamp ). Anyway, when the glass company was installing the new window, he suggested lubricating the window track with WD-40. Try that... it might take care of the squeaking and creaking. Plus... less resistance on the window = less stress on the motor.

Also, mine worked intermittently for awhile before the motor finally bit it. Replace the motor and regulator now before the thing gets stuck in the down position at a drive thru in the middle of winter.

YAY!! Same thing happened to me like 2 years ago. My window was held up with vise grips for like 5 months! Finally found a regulator on eBay for 50 bucks so I snatched it. Id bet the cables in your door popped off the pulleys and its a big mess in there. Mine was anyway.

My windows go up really slow. I took it to the dealer and they supossedly replaced the motors, but its still slow and takes a long time for them to go up. Any info on this?

I lubricated my window runs with spray silicone when they were doing that and they sped up immediately...couldn't hurt, may even extend the life of the window motors a tad.

It's sad that such a great company would make such a CRAPPY window assembly!! Whats even more sad, is if nobody's problems started until after 70-100K miles then they (GM) would probably think it was a success!

I've heard that it's a crappy one, but i don't know. mine went out at 70K and the rebuild has had no problems over the last 52,000 miles. I change the fluid a little bit more often now, and i'm shopping a tranny cooler.

Mine was the same way. funny thing is, on my driver side, i was suddenly not in a rush to fix it. took pulling up to a coffee drive through or fast food about half a dozen times in the rain (think Washington/Seattle) before i finally jumped on it!

I was thinking about the lubrication as well. I think I will try that first but also look into a new regulator. Tried the window a little today, down only half an inch and it went back up ok but its better to be safe with winter coming. I think I remember the owners manual recommending lubrication of the weather stripping as well, so maybe I should have been doing this from day1...

Hey budhayes3: I take it you are a fan of megadeth. You going to see the Deth on their tour? I just moved to Moncton NB and no concerts ever come close to here so I plan to fly to Boston and my brother will join me from Toronto.

Funny you should mention the Deth tour, I just found out they were touring last night! I'll probably miss them though, they're coming to my area on a week night...kinda tough with work and all. Do they have a new album, and if so, is it better than the last 2?
