I recently replaced the old, sloppy timing chain with a new true double roller. I went ahead and put on a chrome chain cover, and I also got the chrome timing tab. Now, when I started, I turned the engine to "0" (TDC) on the old timing tab and made sure is was #1 instead of #6 by checking the dist. When I put the new tab on, I noticed that it does not go all the way to the center of the cover like the old one does, and now the mark on the balancer does not line up with 0 on the new tab since it is farther over to the driver's side. When checking time, will the mark somehow read on the new tab, or is there something I need to do differently?

I assume you are working on an older small block. Safely assuming that, there is a couple different ways to do this. Put the engine at top dead center, the mark on the balancer should be straight up, you can make a new mark with a paint pen of some sort using the new timing tab. This might not be the most acurate way though. Another way is to find a balancer that will work with your particular engine, but has the timing mark that lines up with your new timing tab (not sure if there is such a thing).

Myself...I would put the stock stuff back on, for 2 reasons. 1-chrome leaks, 2-would want the timing tab to be pretty acurate.

Just my 2 cents, hope this helps...

It it a 400, 350 or 305 CDI. And do you have a 7 or 8 inch balancer? From what you saying i would guess you need a differnt tab. Mr. Gasket sells one that should work. Its part number is 4600. Summit racing sells it for 6.99. It might work because it reaches more towards the center. Just my .02
