Paint Fender Flares?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 Z-71, 4x4, Indigo Blue...I don't really care for the black plastic fender flares and I'm thinking about having them painted to match the rest of the truck. Either that or possibly another color like silver? I'm not really sure what to do. I thought after a while I would get used to the black plastic, but I haven't yet and to me they just look out of place. What about removing them? Is that possible? And what would be the consequences of that? Well you guys seem to know your stuff, so I thought I might get some good advice here. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Welcome to the site and thanks for registering  :)

You can remove them.  They are just held on with the little push-in clips.

I'd have them painted though.  Tom from Tbyrne Motorsports (one of our registered vendors) has an Indigo Blue Suburban and he had the flares painted light pewter along with the bottom of the doors and it looks awesome.

Here is a pic...

Shaners,

Hey thanks for the suggestion!  I do like the looks of that and I will consider doing it that way. I have a friend who works at a body shop, so he should be able to do the work for me (he owes me a favor anyway) :)  You say I can remove them...well in your opinion how would it look without them? Would any modifications be necessary if I simply removed them? I mean, there wouldn't be any holes or marks or anything, where they were attached? Thanks again

Do the flairs for the 2002 fit the 2000?  If they do, read the following.

1.  It would look GREAT without them.  Much better.  You dont need them.  Get rid of them fast.

2.  Find someone with a 2000-2002 1500 (say, two tone white and pewter) who is looking for them.

3.  Send them to that person for free.

Just my suggestion.

bdan68,

The flares are attached inside the wheelwell.  If you look at them, you'll see the little push-pin clips going through them.  If you remove them, then your truck will look like a standard Silverado.  The only marks that may be there would be from them rubbing a little, but that should buff out very easily, especially since your truck is brand new.

I say paint them to match your truck.  I've seen a new Silverado that someone painted the flares blue and it looked good!  I don't mind the black look, but the truck looked great with them painted.  While the flares can be removed without harming the truck, I have to say that I just don't like how they look without them.  Kind of like they are missing something....

In my opinion, I say keep them and paint them to match. Not into the 2 tone thing..it screams "hey look, I have flares"  all one color is nicer IMO.

Its all a matter of what you like but thats my opinion.

Newbie, well now I've got a couple of votes for leaving them on and painting to match, and another vote for leaving them on and painting them pewter. If I do decide to remove them, I don't know what use I would have for them so I suppose if you paid for the shipping you could have them, just so I don't have to store them for eternity in my garage. But I need some more encouragement. If I could get a couple of votes to remove them from somebody who ISN'T looking for some cheap fender flares, maybe I would consider it. :)   I'd actually like to remove them and just see what it looks like, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to re-install them. I think I'll get the opinion and help of my friend, the body man. (the guy who owes me a big favor)  Oh, by the way..I did ask my girlfriend's opinion on the two-tone Suburban and she didn't like it, and she does have a slight influence on my decision too. No, I'm not **** whipped, but I need to keep her happy, you know?

bdan68, maybe you would like a smaller fender flares than stock?  MountaineerTom has a set and they look very nice, not oversized like some. They are aftermarket, Bushwacker Street Flares.   As much red as he has on his truck, the black thinner flares really look sharp, not out of place.  Even though red ain't blue, it might give you another option to consider.  Check out his website -
