1995 K1500 leaf spring

Hi,

 

I recently purchased a 1995 Chevy K1500. According to the literature I have, the rear 'D' height should be 7.16 inches. However, it is actually 8.17 inches. The literature also says that the front 'Z' height should be 6.18 inches, but when I adjust the torsion bars to that height, the camber is way off. To get the camber right, I have to adjust the front 1 inch higher than the spec says. So, it appears that both the front and the rear are designed to be 1 inch higher than the spec says it should be. I am trying to determine if the spec is wrong, or if my truck has been lifted by 1 inch. How many leafs are there normally in the rear springs? My truck has 4 leafs. The bottom leaf is considerably shorter than the rest and is almost 1 inch thick. If it is an extra leaf, then that would explain the extra height.

 

The truck does have the snow plow prep package.

Without having the specs with me, from expirence, I know that trucks with plow packages on them have heavier suspension treatments on them. Hope this helps.

My '95 K1500 had 4 leafs in the rear springs...the bottom short/fat leaf is the overload leaf and is normal.....I recently replaced the rear springs w/5-leaf 3/4ton springs, the overload spring is about 6" longer on my new springs...but the thing rode like a stone with square tires when it was empty....so I bit the bullet and put a set of Lord Velvet-Ride* shackles on it, they helped quite a bit....but the rear of my truck is again higher than the front but only about 2"

Thanks for the reply. That brings me to another question. When your truck was all stock, was the rear noticeably higher than the front? If I adjust the front height to the spec, the rear is noticeably higher than the front. The way it is adjusted right now (correct camber at front wheels), the rear is about level with the front.

 

All this came about when I changed the shocks. The front shocks were almost at full extension while the front wheels were on the ground. That didn't seem right, so I started looking at the trim height. Maybe the previous owner had the truck aligned while the front was adjusted to the wrong height?
