I thought that all 4 were only on when using the brights...Is that true?

 

Having your brights on when there is oncoming traffic wouldn't be all that...Well...Bright now would it? Pun always intentional.

 

I wouldn't be all that concerned about the police, lots of cars utilize 4 lights for the high-beams (including some of the older police cruisers).

I have the same question Switch,Fuse, Voltage draw on the relay,

 

Is this better than the relay set-up, I know on the 03-04's you have to supply 12v to the relay, my 02 worked off a ground, no 12v needed

My Rat shack only had the diodes in 2 packs, so it cost me $0.59 + tax for 2 of them. I bought the smallest ones I could find, silicone 50 volt, 1 amp diodes. They are REALLY small. (Ths smallest they had at my local Rat Shack). I simply unplugged the 2 relays as shown, bent the ends of the diode wires at 90 degree angles, and inserted into the #85 holes with the striped end of the diode closer to the high beam relay. Then I plugged the relays back in. It works perfectly. Thank you Iramal!!!

It is so silly-simple it almost seems like a crime, doesn't it? You are most certainly welcome.

 

Now then, I am NOT the originator of this. Waaaay back in 2002, this post was written. It had a nice photo which is now a dead link, but this is the message that got me started:

Now, to put all the nay-sayers at ease who have been giving me private e-mail on this, nothing is going to fry, nothing is going to burn up when you bring the hi and lo beam relays together via the simple and CHEAP diode. All you are doing is supplying trigger voltage to the relay's coil. There ain't no substantial juice there, folks!

 

The relay's purpose is to provide a high amp switch for a function. Since both the lo and hi beam relays are separate, they don't care if they come on together or separately.

 

Voltage to the lamps are independent, so neither of those lamps care if both are on at the same time or not. The only extra current draw would be on the battery/alternator team and they are more than capable for supplying the extra power for all four lamps.

 

The '03 and upwards lamp wiring design is very efficient.

aw man, it took me 5min I had to put shrink tube on it, but Ha Ha it only cost me $1.28 for two diodes at radio shack,

1A 50PIV min. 1n4001

 

I would recommend a higher PIV because (even though they're protected) the relays can send a voltage spike when they "relax" (de-energize).

 

1A 400PIV maybe. Still cheap. 1n4004.

 

Insulate the leads.

 

Remember, this is just relay coil current only (far less than an Amp.), not the full headlight current.

 

I hadn't reviewed OBS wiring, but MAYBE

 

If your older truck is direct-switched, you will need 6 Amp diodes. And the headlights will be slightly dimmer due to the diode drop (.7V).

 

You would be better off to wire up a relay circuit instead. Relay coil (85 & 86) on the high beam filament wires, N/O contacts (30 & 87 NOT 87a) accross the low beam switch contacts. The contacts close with the high beams active and complete the circuit for the low beams.

I'm glad I did mine, It's great. I was iffy about screwing around with diodes, etc. I put them between the relays so if I have to go to the dealer for any electrical problems, I'll pop it right out.

I did the mod, and now I installed Silverstars. With these higher intensity bulbs (still rated at the same wattage as the OEM bulbs) and all 4 lights on, is there any chance of overheating the lens or reflectors? Could I get too much heat with the Silverstars all on at once?

No problem. And the Silverstars are not "hotter", so to speak. Indeed, the tint dims their overall output slightly as far as illuminance. All you are doing is getting a nice tint with just a slight touch of rice which looks pleasing to the eye.
