Extended Warranties???

Am considering an extended warranty on my 2003 Silverado, does anyone have any recommendations> Have about 1500 miles before the factory warranty expires. Have looked at the Warranty Direct and 1SourceAutoWarranty online information.

Be careful with the internet warranty companies...not sure about how many of them are legit. Also, make sure that you read the conditions very closely, I've heard too many stories about people spending alot of jack on warranties just to find out that hardly anything is covered. I've also heard of folks having problems getting re-imbursed from their warranty companies.

I haven't done enough research myself to make a real good judgement, but if possible, try to find a company that's endorsed by GM...maybe talk to your local dealer and find out who they recommend.

I bought my GMPP from them. Very good prices, though they are more than some of the aftermarket ones. But at least you know it will always be honored...

Beware!

 

The warranty company offered "Smart-Choice" and "Easy-Care" extended warranty programs. They paid several claims prior to this without and delay or problems.

 

I took my Yukon to a local stealer (Park's Chevrolet) for an engine miss condition that was a faulty injector, failed rear speakers, clicking noise in front end, coolant loss. The stealer calls I've got a lot of things to get repaired some warranty and some not warranty. He say's you need front and rear brake jobs, water pump, serp. belt, and yada, yada, yada, oh yea and I'm having a hard time getting ahold of the warranty company. You want me to take care of the non-warranty items while I continue to try and contact the warranty company? NO, just fix the covered items. I knew for a fact that I did not need front or rear brake jobs, no water pump leak, and serp. belt had about 30k miles on it. I myself tried to contact the warranty co. and was given a web address (www.sceadmin.com) and found out that the warranty company had gone bankrupt. Claims are no longer being payed. Luckily, I puchased the warranty from a very reputable dealership (Arnold Palmer Cadillac) and they stood behind that warranty 100% paying for all repairs out of their pocket. All I had to pay for was the $50.00 deductable.

 

The warranty company had a fine reputation for years and all of a sudden it went belly up. Most likely, the stealerships helped bring them down.

the gmpp is the safest, and best way to go imo.

i had this one for my truck and is was very hassle free. and, shop around, dealers sometimes mark these up a LOT and you can often find way different prices at different dealerships for the same warranty.

 

i am sure that there are some good aftermarket warranty places out there, but my dealer for one will not deal with any of them. without the gmpp - you, as the customer, have to pay for the repairs yourself and then deal with your warranty company for payment.

I bought my GMPP from Classic Chevy (ask for Don). They had better prices and better service (IMO) than GM Outlet. I have been burned by one of those 3rd party aftermarket warranties so wont touch anything that is not from the factory. A lot of them you have to pay up front and then get reimbursed later, with GMPP no up front costs...

I'd have to second (third? fourth? whatever) the GMPP. I recently bought Major Guard on my 04 Silverado. The GM Outlet link was the cheapest price I found. My local dealer was intent on selling a third party company, but I wasn't too excited about it for all the above mentioned reasons. Also, as a another option, you might want to check with AAA. I looked at their warranty, and it appeared to be a good buy. I can't imagine AAA going belly up. So it might be worth considering. Good luck with your decision.

first u have to ask yourself how much longer u plan on keepin the vehicle after the warranty expires.

 

if plan on say sellin it at 50,000 miles, i wouldnt even get it

 

but if u plan on keepin it well past 100,000, then an extedend warranty is a MUST.

 

GMPP no deductible, is the way the go.

 

if u get the GMPP up to 100,000 miles, u need to figure out your annual mileage, on how much coverage to buy. bcuz the time and mileage starts from the original in service date of the vehicle.

No it doesn't. I just bought one for my 03 in August right before the 1st yr anniversary of it's in service date (and it would be classified as a "new vehicle" i.e., less than 1yr old and 12K miles) The date and mileage start at the time the contract is written, so my 6yr/100K plan takes it until August 2004 (one week short of 7yrs of the in service date) and 108K miles.

When I think of extended warranty's, I think about the aftermarket companies. What stock do they have in my vehicle? They have no stock at all. They have to put their faith in a vehicle that they cannot control the quality of, and keep the warranty price low. This is the main reason that many companies go under, they are paying out for repairs on vehicles that they cannot control. GM on the other hand, can control their quality, that is why they can offer a comprehensive warranty and control costs better. Go with the GM warranty, aftermarket warranties are just asking for trouble.

In his case it still works the same way (date and mileage start on the contract date). The only difference between "used" and "new (less than 1yr old and 12K miles)" is the cost of the plan. You also may not be able to get the real long 6/7 yr 100k with it as well. I waited until the last possible moment to get mine under the new plan as when it went to used the price about doubled I think.
