MTRs for the winter?

Would the goodyear MTR make a good snow/plowing tire? If not, what are some suggestions on which tires to use for a plow truck during the winter. I am located in MI, so there is some deep snow from time to time. Thanks

A buddy of mine has a set of LT285/75R16 MT/R's on his '01 2500HD DMAX/ALLISON and he loves them in the deep heavy wet snows we get here in Southwest PA. He said the truck always goes like a tank through the white stuff, But he also said that they are a little tricky on wet pavement,He said the back end sometimes wants to "break loose" when he's accellerating (Of course it might have something to do with all the mods. he has done to it also!! :chevy: )

Had 265-75R16 Sport Kings A/T's on my 94. Brother-in-law has same size but BFG A/T's on the new Duramax CC, one good snow and not issues. I will keep my Nokians on this winter to plow, they have GREAT traction, I run 285/75R16

Currently I am running 255/85/R16 BFG MTs. They have very good traction in the mud, rain, snow (Have had a few inches here in NW Ind. so far). I have to say however on ice they arent very good. I would say my BFG ATs (285s) are better on ice. I am switching to my ATs for winter (hopefully today) mainly because I dont want to ruin my good set of rims and because the ATs are better on ice

01 Duramax,

I have tested the stock Firestones, BFG's, and Bridgestone REVO's in the snow and for plowing at various times. Stock tires suck, BFG's and revos are not bad but not as good as the Cooper ST snow tires I'm running now (265's). These tires have awsome traction in the snow and on dry/wet pavement. They are not so good in the mud. They are cheap compared to the big names and they have lasted very well.

Catiaeng recommends the Nokian and I have Nokians on my BMW and they are very impressive in the snow. I would like to try them on the truck next time.

The down side here is that I can not find ANY snow tire built in the 285 size. Sure would be nice!

I ran MTR's in the winter once and they were pretty good. I now run BFG AT's and they are much better in the snow and ice. I think there are a couple of reasons for this. "Cleaning" is not really an issue in snow especially in powder, so lug space is not as big as an issue as it is in mud. Second, on ice, you need a good, sharp "edge". The AT's are perfect for this. They have a very distinct edge on them and it "cuts" into the packed snow and ice well. IMO, go with an aggressive, sharped edged, all terrain tire rather than a mudder.

On a side note: any good tire shop can "sipe" a tire (small razor cuts). This will make an incredible difference for bad weather traction.

You can see the factory "sipes" in this Cooper Discoverer LT tire...

I had 285/70R17 MTRs on my 2500HD. I thought they did incredible in the kind of snow we get it Rhode Island which is typically heavy and wet. I don't think I even needed to use 4 wheel drive all winter. I also had the locking rear. That may have been part of it too.

I have the stock mud tires on my Sportsman ATV and even with lockers on both ends have gotten it stuck in deep snow more than a few times. All the deep lugs do it dig 4 holes in it and leave it high centered...I would imagine a mud tire on a truck would do the same.

An ATV in a mudhole digs deeper 'cause there's no solid bottom for it to cut into.

A truck tire cutting through snow would eventually dig down to the road surface and get traction.

In general for ice, you want as much rubber in contact with the road as possible to make the most friction and therefore the most traction.

Snow is different. In real deep snow it may be preferable to use wide tires to stay on top of the snow but you won't get much traction for driving up a steep hill or plowing. In those cases the best tire is a narrow one.

Most of us compromise becuase you have a variety of conditions. A great ice tire is good for wet or icy roads but it's going to suck for deep snow or mud. A tall narrow tire is great for plowing but not good for ice or wet roads.

My opinion is the best all-season & all-condition tire for a heavy-duty pickup that weighs over 6000lbs is a good quality 32" or 33" all-terrain. The 255 to 285 widths are probably the most versatile. For heavier pickups, say over 7000lbs, 295s or 305s are good becuase you have enough weight to balance out the extra width of the tire. This is all just my opinion based on some experience and what I've read from others.

Alot of guys use BFG All-Terrains in 295/75R16 on their Superduties. I think you can fit 305s on them without a lift. I have 285/75s and they are great for deep snow, gravel, mud and sand. They are not so good on real slick stuff that the tire can't bite into-things like wet grass & thin mud on a hard or frozen surface. But like I said, no one tire is gonna do it all and you have to decide what you need most of the time.

I'd like to replace my stock tires on the Sierra with something that is better in snow. Maybe a 265 with a little more tread but that would be about it. I don't need/want to go with anything bigger (did that when I was younger on the Blazer). I have heard Revos were a very good "all around" tire as well.

As for the ATV I was actually in the driveway plowing with it when it got stuck. The stock Goodyear's on it just would dig 4 holes in the snow and leave you stuck. Granted it weighs only like 1/10 the weight of the truck but still sucked having th dig/pull it out that many times last winter.

Last winter I ran 315/75/16 MT/Rs on my truck. I never needed to use 4wd once, however I never did plow but all in all they are a very great tire. I now run my MT/Rs on my dune buggy sand rail whatchamacallit thing and they just kick a$$ and take names.

    • Which one, the AT or AS?   Starfire is made by Cooper/Goodyear but at $85/tire I'd think I'd need to level-set my expectations that they may not even be round 😉 But you're saying they're decent?   I'm already into this thing $1506 in parts, fluids, etc. Totaled all my receipts today. $250 of that was replacing an EGR and MAP sensor that were probably fine, but I'm not going to return the parts since they've been installed. I'm cheap, but not that cheap. I use it, I keep it!   I may or may not make money if I sell the truck at this point, but, that wasn't really the point. And if I billed my time, I'd be hosed for real. My thought on the tires is I "might" put 1,000 miles on before selling it. I just don't want to put absolute junk on it, that doesn't do anyone any good. If the Solus solidly isn't junk, I'll definitely consider them.
    • I leave mine as is. I'm always a trip away from riding on unpaved roads. Dealer can clean it when they prep it after I trade it in for another new truck.
    • I have these on two vehicles and love them. Pepper is one of them 😉
    • 4WD. Far as I know it came stock with P's and not LT's. Definitely planning to put P's on it, but stock is a 109 XL load rating so I should probably stick within that guideline.   No rebates on anything I can see at the moment. Discount Tire is offering $50 off, but Pep Boys is very competitive on price, and also carries all the off-brand stuff. Les Schwab always wants an arm/leg, but they do good work.   It still has the original spare. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, thing looks like a tractor tire LOL!! How times have changed.
    • 2020 Sierra 2500 HD (base model) gas engine 4wd.    All 4 windows roll down on their own. Happens somewhat randomly after stop and engine off - when engine turned off, when walking away from vehicle before or after locks activated. Pulled the window fuse F14 Instrument Panel Fuse Block Right; the driver's side still activates from driver's side door panel; passenger and back seat windows activate from local switches on their doors but not from driver's side group of switches. Power mirrors don't activate with fuse removed either (same fuse for both circuits). Problem not solved.    How can they even activate with fuse removed but they are all still opening and can control from each door?  When they open on their own, I can shut them from the switch in each door, but they don't stay closed.    Seems to be activated somehow with key fob; something bumping the key fob in my pocket or just handling - removed key fob and took it far enough away and now the windows stay closed. Replaced key fob batty just in case, no change.    Sounds like some kind of wiring short or maybe electronics. Dealer will first replace electronic control module without checking anything else and I anticipate problem will still exist since their troubleshooting skills are limited to "do whatever the computer says".  In any case, keyfob seems to be activating the circuitry.    Surely I'm not the only one with this issue, but I can't find anything related on the site. What do yall think?   JohnRoy
