Errors on the Navigation Mapping

Recommended Posts

I love my factory navigation headunit but I'm just curious of how many errors you may have oberved with the mapping. I have version 3.0 and have noticed quite a few just around home.

Some are as simple as misspelled names, some are the right name with the wrong designation like street, road, lane, circle, etc.

Some roads are just not there (and they are not new and they are a major road.)

I have even seen roads shown on the map that just are not there.

I have also seen a handfull of times where the road is just geographically wrong, i.e. the pointer follows it for a little bit than the points moves off the road and shows that I'm driving through a field or something but I'm still on the road.

Two of the above errors are on the road I live on, That is what got me looking for others errors.

Let me know what you may have observed.

I too have noticed such problems. This did not occur on my 2003. I now have a 2005 denali and my nav system sends me in the wrong direction at times and other times it doesn't send me on the quickest route. I am disheartened with this new one. The dealer only offered me an older dvd from my 2003 that I traded in. I travel a lot (the reason I wanted nav in the first place) but if this is what I am going to get I will just use a map. :chevy:

What version DVD do you have and what one did you have? All the software is on the DVD for mapping and guidence. If you liked the version you had in your 2003 it will work the same in your 2005 nav unit.

I'm not surprised actually. Altho I don't have a NAV system yet, I have beta tested a few of the laptop/PC based mapping programs and they had map errors (even ones I reported) for YEARS.

i have a garmin gps on my laptop and it is quite precise. as far as my 2006 denali it is a piece of junk. all i can say is try recalibrating under the nav sttings and see if that help.

I used to run a GPS Mapping program on my Pocket PC, and It was funny sometimes. There were times the unit would tell me to take a "llegal U-Turn". Had to make me laugh.

Keep in mind that geo coding hasn't been around too long. They still don't have all the US roads in the databases. Most of the NAV compainies are useing the same source which was started by goverment funding. But becasue of the growth still going on in the US they are always playing catch up.

I met with someone one for my job that does the geo coding of area's and they drive around the country in a car with a laptop and GPS unit and manually map every road. They program in the speed limits, medians, one way streets all why their partner drives the road. Their are also people out there taking every address and inputting the Lat and Long.

It is cool how they do it, but it is a slow process. I bet in 5 more years you will see massive changes in the quality of these programs. As a side note, in Maui and the virgin islands, you will see nothing on your GPS, they are not coded at all.

The errors are not a result of the GPS unit, they are a result of the map database having either incorrect or outdated information.

i dont know, i have a 2006 denali. if any should be up to date youd think it would be the newest.

I have the '04 INR nav unit in my '03 S-10... and I'm running version 3.0 DVD. I have not noticed a SINGLE error yet! I have used navigation in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and the system has never steered me wrong, tracked off course, or didn't reflect a road that should be there. My mom's new townhouse isn't on the map, but her street didn't exist until a few months ago. LOL

Only thing I found weird about the navigation is the voice prompts, when it comes to street names. It will read off numbered highways, such as "Continue on I-290 west..." but streets it will usually just say "Continue on...the current road..." and understandably so!! But every once in a while I get a surprise "Exit at...Naperville Road" or "Merge onto.. Elgin-O'Hare Expressway" which just blows my mind. How is this possible? Why does it know some streets but not the majority of them?

The vehicle may be new and even the map disc but if the source maps they used to create it is old or outdated it can happen. On one of the map programs, I beta tested the incorrect maps spanned many versions over years. I plan on getting the 2006 version of it later this month and will see if it was fixed or not.

yea i got the 06 fully loaded (except 20" wheels) for 500 bucks more than the 2005, so i figured it was a good deal. i just posted a couple pics in the pic area. i am really hooking it up w full wood, rear camera, air induction, headers, cat back, parking sensors, tailight upgrade, hid lighting, air horn, bull bar, chrome handles , new gauge face and bezel, power inverter, and a new steel cowl hood on the way. whew. all the sh** it SHOULD have come w stock. (the navigator i just foud out has all sorts of cool options). the gps had that one error and has since worked fine since my 2nd recalibration. i will check the version on the disk and post what it is.

The newest Nav DVD is 4.1, not 3.0 - there might be some worthwhile updates there but I haven't seen it personally so I don't know. How is an 06 Denali's navigation system a "piece of junk??"
