sonoma problem

My bro has a 2002 gmc sonoma ext 4.3 auto ZQ8...when the truck is cold, it has a whinning sound which i think is coming from the rear end...its very noticible...once it warms up its fine

 

66,000km

 

any idears?

Is the whining when the truck is moving or sitting still? If it's while the truck is moving, he may have a problem in the rear axle. How cold are we talking here?

I suspect there are bearings going out in the rear axle. Without actually hearing it, one can't make a definitive diagnosis. Change the diff fluid and see how it is after. Also check the bearings while you're in there, if you know how.

While possible in some odd situation, a bad bearing is bad whether it's cold or warm or hot. Can't say I ever heard a bearing noise that went away when whatever the bearing was in warmed up.
