Sup guys, new here.I just got a 1998 Chevy Silverado with the 5.7 Vortech and i'm intereseted in some headers.I think i'm going to go with shorties and if priced ok I may have them coated. Can you guys give me some suggestions.Basically i'm looking for a good sound.I already have a cat-back so i'm good their.I'd like to have some good thick flanges to prevent leakage and such.

Thanks in advance.

Shorties really won't gain you much power. I'd go for long tubes. I've been eyeballing the Doug Thorley tri-y's. they're about the same price as all the over priced shorties out there. They are selling them @ summitracing.com

I appreciate the reply, thanks Hotwire. What about ground clearance with the LT's.I do quite a bit of off-roading.As far as power increase,i'm not expecting a whole lot, basically i'm looking for the least amount of maintenance possible.Right now my truck is plain jane,I want something to be differant than every one else's, and if I had a sweet sounding exhaust that would be perfect.I'm also looking for a increase in gas mileage.

What about the Edelbrocks,Hedman,or the Gibson headers? Not real sure ,just a few that i've noticed.Edelbrocks seem real nice though.Let me know what you guys think.I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

JE

Do not even waste your money on shorty headers!!! Youll kick yourself for it later. Get the coated Thorleys. You will be more than happy.

Hotwire is correct with the Shorty performance. If you aren't expecting a whole lot of performance why buy them? Spend the money on something that will produce more power to the ground.

If you decide to buy headers get the thickest flange that you can. Here are a couple links.

The Other Guys 1/2 flange

Banks 5/8 flange

If I had the $$$ and were to buy headers I would be concidering either one of these makers.

The reason i'm buying them is because I want them and like I said, basically i'm shooting for a better sound. The reason I don't want the LT's is because I take my truck off road some and i'd hate to bottom them out and either warp or crack them costing even more money.I'm happy with performance of my truck and the main thing i'm after is better sound quality and gas mileage.Seems to me that even at shorties tubular headers would be better than the stock manifolds.I have a hot rod this is just my everyday truck.I appreciate your opinions though just not what i'm after.

What about the Edelbrock shorties through Summit anybody know anything about them.

teamjnz,I could'nt find any prices in the links you sent me.Do you have an idea on the price of those.

Thanks for the replies,

I'm happy with my Gibson shorties, they've been on the truck for 3 years with no probs. Quality and fitment is great, I just wish that I had gotten coated, which they didn't offer at the time. They're holding up fine, just not as nice looking as coated ones (mine are stainless). While I didn't feel a night and day improvement, I thought I felt something when I installed them, although your foot tends to get a little heavy right after a performance mod.

I bought them at a local speed shop...can't remember what I paid at the time though...I think they were between $300-$400, but that was 3 years ago.
