I have a Colorado and i am not satisfied at all. So I'm looking at an 02' Silverado. 4x4, 4.8 or 5.3 doesnt matter that much. Ext cab. What are some chronic problems of the truck. Anything in particular i should look for problem wise? Thanks for the advice.

What don't you like about your Colorado? Just curious?

  • CSK (Cold Start Knock) -- a ticking / knocking sound that disappears or lessens after a few minutes. I think this is more hype than anything. Lots of flame wars have been generated over this issue with the GM truck enthusiast brethern. Supposedly, the issue was addressed in the '03 trucks. I have an '03 and it never had the sound. If ths sound never goes away after the engine warms up, and is loud like a diesel, I would avoid it.

  • The last year for the conservative nose. 'Nuff said.

  • Last year for small items, such as hood light, floor light, glove box light

These are good trucks. If it has a decent owner history, and a good maintenance record, get it. Be sure to get a dealer's printout on warranty repairs.

Well at 700 miles my tranny went out. completely, and i was following the break in to a T. cab is noisey as hell. and this past week the service 4wd light came on, ABS failure, and my speedometer no longer works. I have been reading alot of stuff and some guys say that 4wd is the 4wd transfercase (and it need to be completely replaced), the ABS idk and the speedometer i have no idea. Just unsatisfied. But i have many family members with silverados and they havent had a problem period.

We use '03 and '04 chevys for work trucks. Some of the problems I have seen with our trucks have been a popping sound while the truck is running or turned off. Turns out that the heat shield covering the muffler flexes or something like that. The dealer said you have to change the heat shield and the two straps that hold it up, by the way this is a recommended repair but not a recall. Then we had to replace the straps that hold up the tailgate, this one is a recall. The dumb thing is if the straps break then the hinge on the tailgate bend and cracks. The recall letter said they would fix the tailgate if this happened but when we took it in the tech said your tailgate has to be about to fall off the truck before they will fix it. I have seen a couple of speedos fail and we had to replace the whole gauge cluster, not cheap. I don't know if it's just our trucks or chevys in general but, our gas mileage kinda sucks. Noe keep in mind we have fiberglass canopies with steels tube ladder racks a 12' step ladder 28' ext ladder and a few tools and electronic parts. I know this will bring it down a bit being loaded down all the time but we only get 450-500 kilometers per tank, but that seems a little low. We have the 5.3l 2500 HD. With all this said I still like them, I'm even thinking of buying a 2000-2001 Tahoe.

Search for what annoys you about your truck, covers all the common problems. Sounds like your Colorado was a bad toad. Good luck with Silverado. As for 4.8 vs. 5.3 the 5.3 is more torquey. The 4.8 more revvy. Mileage negligible. (IMO).

turns out my main harness was wraped around the front drive shaft. great huh? plus the front drive shaft shield was bent and some check engine light came on and it turns out it was some gas mileage code or soemthing. wont get it back till the weekend.

I have two of them, both are mechanically great. No trouble out of the 02 or 04, but my 04 is an ext cab and I really dont like the little creaks when the body flexes at low speeds (although this is could be the nerf bars and not the doors) and I have a few rattles in the 04. All in all, I would recommend one to anyone who wants a nice, reliable truck but does not expect it to ride like or have the NVH levels of a Lexus.

I've had a slew of little problems but nothing major, but I bought the first model year. Two of my friends had/have 02's and they have been virtually problem free...seems like they worked out the most of the kinks by 02.

My '02 Z71 Ext Cab 5.3 has 42,000 miles... So far I'm VERY pleased! Only real issues were a steering clunk and a drivers side power window problem. Both fixed under warranty and have not re-occured... I do have the CSK noise, but I'n not really concerned with it. It goes away after a few seconds.
