Help me fix my axle wrap!

Whenever I take off from a stop or come to a stop and let my foot off the brake, I hear and noise coming from the rear axle/suspension/somewhere back there, and i'm almost positive it is axle wrap...I know I can get a set of trac bars, add-a-leafs will help, but is there anything cheap and effective I can do? What causes this to happen? My truck is a '98 Z71, no lift, riding on 285/75/r16's

Should I try tightening the u-blots? Anything that will stop this before I break something?

Thanks for any help, Dan

Are you sure it isn't just the sound of your brake drums groaning when you release the brake? Whenever you preload the suspension, intentionally or a high idle that makes the truck squat down in the rear, it fights the brakes and when you release, it'll groan.

I doubt it'd be your leaf springs, but you could throw some weight in the back to settle things down. I only get axle wrap when I powerbrake or burnout..... half-ton's have pansy springs and they will let you know when the axle is wrapping itself. U-bolts have nothing to do with it. Go for add-a-leafs or get a heavier spring pack from a 3/4 ton.

It does it when I start accelerating and when the truck settles back when coming to a stop, I'll then let off the brake, and give it some gas and I hear noise and can almost feel something, do you think some aal's will solve the problem?

If it is just the brakes, should I try sitting still in neutral without any brake pressure, then shifitng to drive and see if it still makes the noise? How would I go about fixing it if is it the rear brakes? Sorry to sound like a newbie, but i've been a front-drive irs strut suspended driver until now, this whole leaf spring/solid axle is new to me

It might be the driveshaft yoke. Get the nickel plated one. :seeya:

So how can I tell for sure it is the yoke? I've been reading, and found it could be axle wrap, shocks, brakes, slip yoke....I really just dont know how to narrow down the problem, any help would be appreciated

Also, how much am I looking at for a new slip yoke?

I'm starting to think it is the slip yoke....I read a TSB found through google, and it sounds like thats my problem...I guess axle wrap would only occur under heavy acceleration/power braking, and my truck makes the noise all the time, also I read I can drive like this safely, as long as I can live with the noise, which I can for awhile until I get around to fixing it, so will I be ok to keep driving my truck with the squeaky/clunky noise?

Thanks for everyones help

My slip yoke would bump when coming to a complete stop and then bump again at take/off from a complete stop. Everytime. I finally took to chevy garage and was quoted 600-700 dollars to fix. I went home took it apart and slapped some ptfe grease on it. Work like a charm. The grease zerk is no good, do not bother with it. When pulling a part, mark alignment for easier assembly.
