has your water pump gone out?

what are the symptoms of a water pump going out... is there a way to tell before it happens?

If the pump is leaking out the weep hole in the snout it time for a pump.

What simptoms do you have?

Or the bearing could go bad and you'll hear it...it'll make a growling type of noise. I once saw a water pump's impellers rot away (caused an overheating problem due to no circulation), and on another occassion I saw a water pump where the impellers sheared completely off...but that is very rare.

Saw one 95 where the shaft came off the pump and the fan tore a hole in the shroud and hood  But knowing the guy that drove the truck it probably was wobbling and making noise for weeks before that happened.

Most of them just start leaking out the weap hole. 96-00 small block and 4.3L vortecs are really bad about having that happen.

they will most likely puke out of the weep hole soon after you shut the engine off.... so check the ground where you've been parking~ centripital force keeps the water in the pump when its running but when things stop, it'll drool a few ounces on the pavement.

well, none of those symptoms match my problem so i guess i'll keep troubleshooting. 3 mechanic shops so far, guess i'll probably hit the stealer next.

I put in an Autozone lifetime warranty one for my 91 2 years ago. No problems.

I usually end up using ASC waterpups (I'm pretty sure they come with a lifetime warranty. Changing a water pump isn't a big project. You'll spend more time removing the accessories, fan shroud, etc, and the gasket from the pump than you will actually changing the pump housing.

well, i'm still trying to figure out what is going on from this thread here where i mentioned the rattling under my hood. it all SEEMS to be coming from under the heatshield on the passenger side (in the oil dip tube region). can't zero in on a problem though. like i mentioned on the other thread, i thought o2 sensors were a possiblity, but they all seem to be snug.

I also thought originally maybe the CATs were going out, but a pound tests results in no rattling. sound seems closer to the engine, higher up from the cats. i have 130K miles on the truck if that gives any futher ideas out...

i appreciate your time on this post guys.

I've had my Gibson shorties on so long that I can't remember if there's a lower heat shield under the exhaust manifolds...if so, maybe it's loose or cracked?
