Alright, you guys have seen the pic of the car....seriously, it was a decent deal for 20K, so I knew they'd be something wrong, little things ya know......so I've repalced the window crank handle, a interior light was fading, and teh headlights' needed hoses......and the heater didn't work....

so that looks like all the "big" issues, not bad at all, all easy cheap stuff.. 3 down, heater core to go. I got off early today(well, at the 8hr mark, that is early for me!) so I decide to bypass the heater core so I can still drive ir w/o a leak. DOH one hose is 3/4, one is 5 /8 so I can't bypass directly useing the installed things, cause the diameter on the hose and adpator thing on the manifold are different sizes.......but wait.....why didn't any anti-frreze come out of the hose? and what is.......

some dork had stuffed a bolt in the hose blocking teh heater core (in tube?) trying to stop the coolant from getting to the core........so it looked normal, but didn't leak.whcih means that coolant wasn't circulating properly. I'm suprised I didn't boil-over all the time, thanks must go to the electric fan and aluminum radiator.......

but anyway, you THINK the people at Ventura Classics, in Tulsa, OK would have at least mentioned that.....

oh and BTW, the engine spec sheet they promised me when I bought the car in decembder? haven't gottwn it yet, so I bet I'll never know what cam it has.

I went ahead and ordered a SS steering wheel badge also, the only badge it was missing to "look" like a true RS/SS.....remember it's originally just an RS car....

now only differnce is a 12 bolt and front discs, which that other thread states I'll be addressing in teh future.

Man! Sorry to hear about your troubles. Yeah, that is a load of bs. The 8 hr mark is early for me, too! Good luck with your future mods to the car, and please keep us updated.

Water does not have to flow thu the heater core. Many many cars have a heater control valve that shut off hot water to the heater core to aid in A/C performance. Sorry to hear about the luck. You probally should have had someone who knows about cars look at it before you bought it. They might have found that and you could have gotten it fixed. Especially for $20k Oh well it's still a nice ride. A heater core shouldn't be too bad to replace though. I would imagine $200 or so to have it done.

no way!!! have you looked in the Auto Trader lately? a car like this is running around 22-24K.

don;t get fooled by the ones for 20Kish ones in there, I looked at some of them they are "nasty customized", or are so personalized they don't appeal to many. which is another reason even though he wouldn;t coe off the price I was still gonna pay up.

and a mechanic wouldn't have found this, because mechanic's don't take apart heater core lines, looking for bolts stuff in. Plus, I know plently about cars, I've actually taught mechanic's some things about cars. LOL. not that I know more than them, I just know quite a bit. This is a non-A/C car, and wouldn't have a shut off, which means the coolant might not have been flowing "full circle".

and I've already got the part on the way, Classic is having a sale, it cost me 55 bucks WITH the new SS emblem for teh steering wheel!

I love old cars, took like 15 minues have the old core hosing disasselbmled and I've never done a 69 camaro before.

Napa has a heater core for $35.

Also a disinterested party may have turned on the heater to see if it worked. Hence no heat because of the bolt.

I don't mean to offend I'm sure your camero is worth what you paid. I recently sold a 69 convertable firebird that was 100% original just needed work. I got it for near nothing and don't really care for cars without full frames. So I sold it. I am well aware what people will pay for cars and what condition they may be in. :D:fume::mad: I made a killing on that bird.

Oh the life of owning a classic ride. At least your heater core is easy to change. Mine in the 65 Impala isn't so easy with all the AC stuff under the dash as well. At least yours is not all in primer with no interior like my Impala. Been that way for, ooohh 15 years now. Just don't have the cash flow to work on it and to do it right. If it isn't a new house, then it is adding a garage, one thing after another. One day it will be done and hopfully look as good as yours.

For now I have to go back into the Jetta, the rings never seated after I rebuilt it and so out comes the pistons again to see what is wrong. I really miss and need that 45mpg right now.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
