NEW COOLING FANS

Recommended Posts

I just wondered if anyone has put the new dual elect. fans

off the 05's on there 04'-03'. What would it take to do the swap?

Would there be any good resons for the change? It seems like it

would give you at least 5 more ponies  every other mod does!

Any thought would be great I have a chance to pick a few up for a song.

C'mon be the lab rat and let us know how it goes.

Seriously though, I've been waiting for some one with the green to try it. I have thought it would be a good idea from the start.

I am going to do it shortly. Have been running without the clutch fan all winter and on a 250 mi trip that i do weekly my average is up about 1 mpg. Sure love the throttle response and quiet.

Here is where to buy the OEM fan setup. Ead is haveing a group buy and if we get 7 or more is cheaper.

Go to LS1.com for more info.

The only thing needed other than the fans is making a wire harness & controller.

Y'all might want to check out the pages upon pages of research that the guys at the Silverado SS site has done for the past year on adding the '05 fans. The major issue has been the harness. The messages range from helpful, to a minor flame-fest (maybe those have been deleted?), then helpful again:

Gotta have a 34" rad, alot of money and a way to control the fans. Wether it be the DCC conctroller, crappy FAL VSC or a harness to have them controlled by the PCM. You and your wallet would be better off if you just snagged some fans off an LS1 f-body.

I believe all 5.3L 4x4's have a 34" rad. Wireing isnt a real problen. I am using a adjustable controller to run 1 fan for regular driving and a relay to turn on both fans for the A/C. My total will be $180 for the fan and about $29 for the controller and some wire and connectors. Not over $230 and with gas going to $2.50+ this summer the 1mpg will help.

This topic is sure interesting. The major issue here seems to be cost. Is that why GM has not done this a long time ago. I know the technology has been there for decades. All front wheel drive cars use controlled electric fans and have been using them since the 80's. I remember when my grandfather purchased his 93 K2500 with the 454. It had an electric backup fan from the factory mounted right onto the radiator. You would think with the HP wars between the big three that one would go with the fans to get the extra HP ratings to brag on. Clutch fans have always been a good solution to cooling the motor down but it seems to be a hindering on everything else. Water pumps for example take on the extra torque from a locked up clutch and these things seem to fail without warning. It just makes more sense that two electric fans would be more reliable than the old fluid-filled clutch system. On the other hand, after reading this post it seems that the prices of production and aftermarket products need to come down dramatically to actually be cost effective. I will just keep the clutch fan until there is an easier, cheaper fix.

The 5.3L DO NOT have the 34" radiator, so the 05 E-Fans will not fit. But LS1 fans will fit.

5.3L Radiator Size

Core Size: 28-1/4 X 17-1/2 X 1

Look it up in any online radiator parts store.

I went and opened at least 8 2005 Silverado at my favorite Chevy store and all 1500's that had 5.3L and 4x4 had the 34" radiator and including my 04 and my neighbors 02. The 05's all had electric fans too. Seeing is believing. Dont always trust the books.

As of now i havent found a harness/controller made for 04 back. I am using a Perma cool adj. controller and wireing it from the underhood fuse box to the LH fan. Then in the same harness i am making i am using a Bosch relay and picking the A/C signal for the compresser to the relay and sending 12v to the RH fan with a diode between the two fans so the LH fan runs along with the RH when A/C is on.

Theree isnt the required circuts in the 04 PCM and isnt programmed for electric fans. My system will work just as well without a newer PCM.

I am using the OEM fan setup because of the OEM looks and the shroud is designed to support the upper radiator hose. :(

Do you have a web site or info on the perma cool controler.

Its good old Jeg's High Performance and the controller is 771-18905 @ $51.99 and if you have A/C the relay is 771-19002 @ $8.99 :(
