mcreyaufmiller Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Okay, so heres the deal. I have a 98 with a 5.0. I have an opportunity to purchase at an incredible price, a 454 from a 98 3500 dually. At first, I was thinking about dropping it into my hot rod, but now I am considering putting it in my 98. Do I need a new computer or will my existing computer be able to drive the bigger motor?
intruder217 Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Can you get the computer from the donor vehicle?
mcreyaufmiller Posted March 19, 2005 Author Posted March 19, 2005 No computer is gone already. As I think about it, the computer just monitors systems, if I have a v-8 and put a cam in it or do some other mods, the computer will adapt itself, so why would it have a problem adapting to a bigger motor?
Cool Zr2 Posted March 19, 2005 Posted March 19, 2005 You need the pcm for the 454 because it has the proper fuel curves for it, the 305 programming would lean it out and probably blow it up, plus, the 454 utilizes a different fuel injection setup than the 305/350, so you probably won't even be able to hook it up. Being it has a different fuel injection setup, the pcm won't know how to run it. And your trans won't be able to handle it. You would need a custom harness, change the headers, rad, mounts, trans, pcm, etc.
