4x4 service light coming on?

Recommended Posts

Had some freezing rain last night, wife driving the truck, she switched it to 'auto 4x4' and the 4x4 service light came on?

Any ideas what to look for here? Will it come on if you switch on the fly in this truck? I just sold my Ford for this truck so am not sure!

It is an '03 Chev CC 1500HD

Thanks

Stefan

Usually a bad switch. At least it's my guess.

GM has had problems with the dash switch, all most all cases where solved with a new switch.

Thanks !

Now is there a positive way to diagnose a switch problem?

The 4x4 is kicking in, but the light is coming on. With a bad switch is the truck still going to go into 4x4??

And, can I change it out relatively easy??

Thanks

Pull the dash bezel and 2 screws and the switch comes right out. Remove wire connectors and replace. Mine was doing that on the same truck. Did it twice, bought a new switch and has yet to do it again so I have the new switch riding around in the glove box just in case!!

Only the Tech II can communicate with and test the switch.

Just to try and confirm.....

If the switch is bad will the truck still go into 4x4? Or will it stay in 2WD? Mine does go in 4x4 and the light is on, my worry is that it is something worse??!!

When mine failed, the indicator lights in the switch didn't illuminate. Nor did the backlight work. I think it would go into and out of 4x4. The DIC said "Service 4WD".

I turned it off, pushed all the buttons a bunch of times and when I turned it back on, everything worked. That told me it was a bad switch module.

I then pulled the bezel and then pulled the switch. There were no screws, just snap clips, #@%.

I then disassembled the switch and resoldered all the pins from the connectors. It hasn't failed since and it's been about 3 or 4 weeks since I did it. Yeah, it was under warranty, but I didn't want another switch "just like the old one" installed by the dealer, who probably wouldn't be as careful changing it out as I was. Only time will tell, but I'm pretty sure it was a bad switch.

Yes. Pry one clip out a little and slide the switch forward. Then pry another clip and keep working it out a little at a time until you get it.

When you pull the main bezel (around light switch, speedo, radio, hvac, etc.), start at the lower right corner and pop it loose a little. Work around the top and bottom from right to left until you have all the clips loose. You will want the tilt wheel all the way down, and the gear selector lever clear in low-low. You WILL end up actuating your hazard flashers, trust me! You need to pull the top of the bezel towards you and then lift the bottom over the steering column. It comes off real easy though. Took me about 3 minutes the first time. I'm sure then next time it will be even faster.

Once you have the bezel out, the switch is easy to pull if you can master the snap clips. Use a screwdriver to pry the tab to the side and work the switch out a little at a time. It also helps to do this on a warm day, otherwise the plastic is brittle if it's cold. Once you get it loose, there are two connectors on the back side. I think I had to pry the clips off those connectors too...

If you decide to pull the switch apart, have fun. There's six clips holding it together and you have to work it apart real slow to keep from breaking anything. It all snaps back together real quick though.

If you'd like, I can send you an email with pictures I took while I had it all apart. Let me know...

Good Luck!
