Good article on Oil

Interesting. It seems that you shouldn't use a PAO synthetic till at least 12k miles. Makes sense, but yet, I wonder why he didn't explain why Mobil 1 is a factory fill on some new vehicles. From what he is saying your not suppose to use synthetic right away. Brings up some good food for thought.

He missed the German made Castrol oil 0w-30 that is available at Auto Zone. It is a true PAO synthetic, another great choice to use. :D It has really good used oil analysis reports on BITOG.com

Well arn't the motors for the viper and Vett, that come with Mobil 1 are hand built? Maybe they are better engineered and built better, and can get away with a slippery oil.

The Corvette LS! & LS2 are made on the assembly line just like the truck engines and assembled in St. Catharines, Ontario.

I have always put Mobil 1 in my trucks and cars ASAP after 500 miles since 1993 and have never had any engine problems including burning oil. :D

Porsche factory fills with Mobil 1. Their break in period is very strict (no more than 4k rpm for the first 2k miles!). The reason is understood by many to be that the Mobil 1 is so slippery it takes that long to even begin to run in the bearing surfaces. Also, they are very strict that the original factory oil stays in a minimum of 7500 miles!

I'd wonder if it's Mobil1 with some sort of break-in additive. Otherwise, why couldn't you just change it at say 500 miles and put Mobil1 back in?

I think BMW does something similar too.

I only use the OEM oil for that short of a time because i dont want to disrupt the break-in cycle. If you change too early the engine isnt broke-in. GM says to drive it 500 miles and easy which i do and then change to Mobil 1. Some Corvette owners had problems with break-in because they changed oil as soon as they got the cars leading me to believe that there is so compound in the factory fill.

I will contact some people in GM i know and find out for sure if there is an additive.

I know one thing for sure and that a GM engine is never broke-in until about 10-12 miles. My own records conferm it and GM has told me too. You will notice that around that mileage the if any oil usage usually stops and fuel economy increases.

My personal records are based on a new truck every 50-70K and no more than 2 years and my wife's cars 3 years and 50-60K for the last 18 years. :D

Yes,The LS1 and LS2's are built at St.Catharines,Ontario but the LS7 in the new Z06 is going to be hand built at GM's new performance center in MI.

I thought I had heard something along those lines before. Also the Cobra mustangs were hand built. But I don't know what oil came in them.
