How much fuel after low fuel light comes on??

Not sure how many gallons, but my 05 Z71 crew has the 98ltr tank. I am below the 1/4 mark on the fuel guage, and was wondering if anyone knew a approximate amount of fuel that is left once the "low fuel" light comes on.

 

I have done searches, but cant find a difinitive answer. Some people claim that once their light comes on, you have a few miles at best before you run out of gas. I hope this is not the case, because I am still on my first tank of gas and havent tested the limits as of yet.

 

So, the question remains.....anyone have any real word tests or experience that can enlighten me as to how far I could conceivably drive once the low fuel light comes on. My DIC says I can still drive 63km (and the light is NOT on yet). But yet I read posts in the past that after the DIC indicated a 0 mile range, people have still been able to drive a considerable distance.

According to the specs, the 1/2 ton has a 27 gallon tank. Every time I fill up, I reset my computer's temporary history so I can keep track of my MPG and how many gallons I have burned so far and so on... The fuel light tends to come on when there is two to four gallons left in my tank. If you take 27 minus how many gallons you've spent and then mulitplied that number by your average MPG, that will tell you exactly how many miles you have left before you're SOL. Personally I have gone as far as 60 miles after my light came on before I got gas. I don't think there is any set amount of miles, it all depends how you drive my truck. i hope this has helped you. I have a 2004 1/2 ton, so I think we're in the same boat. But I also don't recommend driving with the light on...only in emergencies.

I have a 04' Yukon and my light typically comes on with 30 miles showing on the "distance to empty". How accurate this is....I do not want to find out. Good luck with your quest "Cosmo Kramer".

Obviously it varies based on driving style, at the very least. But I'd always believed that GM tried to engineer their vehicles so that you'd have at least a 20 mile breathing space to get to a gas station once the light came on. I thought I read that somewhere but I have no clue where now. I do know that I've owned five different Chevy's ranging from an 88 Beretta GT to my 04 Silverado and 04 Malibu, and all have given me at least that much. (Never actually pressed the issue to see how much further I could go before drive turned to push'n'shove though )

I never let my HD get low enough for the low fuel light to come on, I dont want to see how much it would drain out of me at once to fill it.

I have driven mind 30 miles but it was on an interstate and it was none stop.

I have an 04 1/2 ton crew cab. My low fuel light typically comes on when I have about 2.5 - 3 gal's left in the tank. About 30 miles is pushing it as far as what you can do safely at that point.

... and if you wait for the light to come on for every fill-up, you will probably be replacing a fuel pump sooner than normal.

 

Fill it up at 3/8 of a tank and your fuel pump will hopefully last longer.

low fuel light comes on with 6 gals left on a 34 gallon tank and with 4.3 gallons left with the 26 gallon tank.

By no means do I want to temp fate, but since this will be my very first fill up, I was just curious....as I suspect the light MAY be on by the time I hit the gas station tonight. Obviosly I hope it isnt, but should it on my drive home (only 10km) I just wanted some reassurance that I will not run out of gas.

the light in my truck comes on when i have 3 or 4 gallons left.

in my gf's enovy, when the light comes on you had better get to a gas station right away. when it says low fuels, it means low fuel!

Well, I filled up last night and here are the details:

 

low fuel light had NOT come on yet and I put in 89.803 litres of gas. I travelled a total of 465km which was all city driving.

 

Therefore my 1st tank of gas averaged a whopping 12.18 mpg

 

Realizing that there is no sense complaining....I assume that milage will eventually go up slightly. The motor is still being broken in, synthetics havent been used yet, and some minor performance mods havent been done yet......not to mention it is still winter up here.

 

If I can average around 14-15 city, during the summer months I will be very happy

My Sierra Denali shows 37 miles on the DIC when the light comes on. Just did it 2x I know it's not good to run below a quarter tank!
