My service engine soon light came on & usually will come on when I fill the gas tank & go off like owners manuel says after removing fuel cap . This time it hasnt gone off. Its a 2000 5.3 with 32K knocker.

so the light is on now and doesn't go off when you take off the fuel cap and put it back on?  I would unhook the battery for about 10 minutes and then hook it back up.  If the SES light stays on still then take it to the dealer so they can hook it up to the code reader.

I had a 99 Silverado, 5.3, and this problem drove me crazy. I took it to the dealer about three times and they could not find anything wrong. I found that if you opened the fuse centre under the hood and pulled a 10 amp fuse in the centre of the box for egr, if I remember right, getting too old, turn on key for a few seconds, turn off, put fuse back in and the light went off. Seems like it rebooted the computer or somthing. I guess this would be the same as unhooking the battery. The gas cap trick or filling right to the top didn't seem to work for me.

Have 2001 now and hasn't come on once.

Thanks for the help. Ill try both & hopefully I wont have to go to dealership as I am one of the knocking complainers for over a year before I found out that I wasnt the only one. Thanks again

The fuse is actually marked ECM. Its for the computer and is the same thing as disconnecting the battery if you take it out. I don't know about turning the key on, I wouldn't turn on the key with the ecm fuse pulled out. Just pulling it will reset the computer. If your radio doesn't retain its memory, its easier than disconnecting the battery and resetting everything. (mines aftermarket and doesn't hold its memory)

Some have 2 of them, ECM1 and ECM2. I'm not sure why, but when I do it, I pull them both and wait about 10 minutes then put them back in.

I told you my memory was fading. Yea, I tryed pulling the fuse with the engine running and the truck quits but I don't lose radio memory, so I switched to the Key idea. Any way the light would go off.
