No Trailer Brakes

Recommended Posts

Ok, I bought and installed a Prodigy (tekonsha) brake controller. Also bought the direct plug, so I didn't have to splice any wires.

My problem is I have no trailer brakes. When I hook up the trailer, the controller stills says that nothing is hooked up. So I had my girlfriend press the brake pedal and I put a test light on the plug at the rear of the truck, No power.

So is there something that I am overlooking. I checked the fuse under the hood and was ok. Or a least I think that is the fuse (stud #2)

Any help would be great.

I have seen the post that you had mentioned, but that is for the 12V power to charge the trailer battery and I have added that fuse.

Everything else on the plug works fine, I have had the camper for about a year and used it about a dozen times, but I just now got around to buying the controller, just incase I need the brakes.

Do you get any reading of having power at the controller?

As you said you should get a reading of being connected to the traielr and you should get a reading of voltage applied when you press the brake pedal.

Stud #2 is the one that should provide power for the Controller.

You may have to unplug the controller and check for voltage on the cable pins.

The Controller has power and is on, But when I pull the manual nob it gives me and "nc" basically saying that the trailer is not connected.

Does your trailer have brakes?

If I understand you correctly you are also saying the you do not get the ".C" when the trailer is connected. That would indicate either the brakes in the trailer are not connected or the truck brake wire is missing. I gotta suspect something in the trailer.

I am really thinking slow tonight. Check the trailer brake wires. Many times they are not hooked to the right pin. For example they often hook them to the center pin of a 7 pin connector (pin 7) when they should be on pin 2.

I haven't checked the trailer yet.

But I still am not getting power the brake pin on the plug when the brakes are applied, So I am thinking that something on the truck is not working. If I can get power to the pin on the plug, then I can eliminate that as a problem. If it still doesn't work, then I will start looking into the trailer.

And Yes the trailer has brakes.

A SHOT IN THE DARK...........................

I remember from some old posts that GM changed the

arrangement of the "pins" a couple years back.

My 01 pin power arrangement IS different from my 04 !

They LOOK identical but the wiring is switched !

I had a F**K of a time figuring it out !!!!!!!!!!!!

A sharp eyed RV guy who is "net" saavy saw a post

somewhere and fixed me up !.......................geo

Here is what I would check to help diagnose this. You should have 4 wires going to your brake controller. They are +12 volts constant supply, ground, +12 volts when brake pedal is pushed and +12 volts output to your trailer brakes. Have you checked the two +12 volt inputs to your controller to see if they are working correctly? If they are, then check the +12 volt output to the trailer brakes. Check it first right at the controller and then at the rear of our truck at the trailer plug. If it works at the controller but not at the rear of the truck then you know you have a problem with the wire in between. Check these and report back.

I will try to check the pins at lunch and see what I come up with.

I am going to look at the trailer when I get home from work.

Thanks in advance for all of the help.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can get a measurement at that plug pin without being connected to the trailer. It may need a real low resistance load, something like 1 or 2 ohms. I don't think the controller will apply voltage unless it can detect a load.

Do you get the ".C" dispay when you hook up the trailer? That is needed to verify that the controller sees the trailer brakes.
