New Duramax Aftermarket Questions??

Just picked up a new duramax and Im ready to start dumping some bucks into it!

All I want to do is add exhaust, an intake and a programmer. But since I've never dealt with diesel products, im not real sure where to start....So im looking for a few suggestions. I think it runs pretty d@mn good as it is, but I cant resist....

Exhaust - What's a good one to look at? MBRP, Magnaflow, Bully Dog, ect……? No clue here!

Intake - AFE seems to be a popular one! How are the Volant intakes? The new ones any better than the older systems?

Programmer - Don’t think I want to go with the Edge/Bully Dog stuff, way to many warranty concerns! Dealer specifically mentioned those (and similar) would void the warranty! Was looking at the Diablo's, heard some good things about those for the duramax. Possibly a Wester's tune, but '05 tunes are way, way, way over priced right now!

So, any thoughts or suggestion from anybody out there with duramax knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't have a DMAX....YET!

But I have three buddies that do and they all have the same stuff in them.....

The Edge Juice programmers

One is an '01 w/50,000+miles,one is an '02 w/45,000+miles and the last one is an '03 with over 215,000 miles on it (Yes...215,000 miles on an'03!) and none of them have had any issues at all,And they all run like a bat outta' hell!

Congratulations on the DMAX. If you like, take a look at my signature to see the exhaust I run on my HD. It’s silent at cruise speed and aggressive under WOT.

As far as the Diablow is concerned - stay away from it with a 10’ pole. Diablow was the first programmer I tried on my DMAX – it was a terrible experience from a service and performance perspective. The egt’s ran way too hot, and the truck began to “surge” under mild acceleration. Needless to say, the Diablow is now a paperweight that has little use when compared to my Edge module and my Quadzilla Programmer. If you want a real good, reputable HP mod, I suggest the Edge Juice and its ability to select from its various settings with great ease. The dealer hasn’t picked up on my Edge during any of my visits to the service bay. Just remember to remove the Edge before you go in for service and all is good.

One more thing that I would add to your list of mods: don’t forget to invest in a set of boost and pyro gauges. The exhaust you’ll be adding will lower your temps, but the HP mods you put on can easily take you into the red if not closely monitored via some good gauges. Knowing how hot you’re running and how much boost the turbo is producing is always a good thing when pulling or hauling arse.

Good point on the gauges Machine,You definetly want to keep an eye on the EGT's and boost with a programmer,with that said,my buddy with the '03 also got Edge's digital readout display that goes in the factory overhead console,its a nice clean looking setup and it has all the readouts you need...EGT,Boost,Coolant Temp.,etc.

Plus you can change the program settings going down the road!!

I was considering the Edge EZ. It has three settings plus stock and adds good power without modifying the exhaust etc...

The edge/Attitude is a great system, but to use its' maximum power settings, an exhaust mod is highly recommended.

Guages will definately be my first addition! I seem to be leaning towards the Edge after everything that Im reading. Ive' initially been nervous about it due to the the horror stories the aftermarket guy at the stealership was telling me (as he's trying to sell me one at the same time.. ).

Can the Attitude be used without the Edge Juice Module? And if I use it, do I still need additional pyro & boost gauges?

As far as more power....Im not looking to get crazy with this thing! From my understanding, the Dmax is already pushing the limits of the Allison, so the last thing I need is to kill it!!! Just want a decent exhaust, quality intake (if needed?) and some sort of programmer. I would skip the programmer all together, but I need to be able to udjust for different tire sizes...

Yes, the Attitude module can be used with the juice programmer. The method of changing stages is less combersome becuase it is at the push of a button. As far as the pyrometer, yes, it has one. You will have to tap into your exhuast manifold for the thermocouple. It reads a number of things like boost, EGT's, RPM's, etc. You can also enter your tire size and use it to record 0-60 and quarter mile times. One of my good buddies has the Juice with Attitude and it is the cats meow. He is also still running with the stock exhaust system and it runs great. On stage 5 it flies. It is the fastest 7500lb 4WD I have ever ridden in, by far.
