What is that thing on the 8.1......?

What is the black bull sack lookin thing hangin off the intake tube on the 8.1? Would it hurt to cut it off? The intake tube looks pretty clean otherwise - just thought it might smooth out the flow a bit if that thing wasn't hangin off the bottom.

I believe it's called a Helmholtz resonator and GM uses it to cut down on intake noise. It can supposedly be tuned to help torque slightly at certain (midrange) rpms.

Help what? It won't hurt but removing it will make it louder when you floor it. That's about all that you'll notice. If you wan't a showable engine compartment and it bugs you saw it off, but be prepared for louder WOT.

Just read the pros/cons, someone has waaaaaay too much time on their hands to think of this stuff. And of course they add the friendly/courteous looking help girl up top to bring it all together.

If it doesn't serve any real purpose other than quieting things down in the intake, I may just lopp it off - I'm actually looking for a little more noise.
