GMIP-01 and KNGM-1?

Hello.

 

I'm wonder if anyone has tried to use a GMIP-01 and KNGM-1 together?

 

I love having Sirius in my truck, and I also use my iPod at work. It

would be great if I could switch between both using the #6 button.

 

I imagine this might not be possible, since both devices are interface

boxes, rather than just wires going to the factory XM tuner.

 

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The KNGM1 is an adapter box made by Soundgate and allows

a newer GM Radio to control Sirius instead of XM. Full text display etc.

Anyway, this adapter box, looks just like the GMIP-01's adapter box,

and the harness is almost identical.

 

Thus raises my question on how you could hook both boxes to work

together. I don't think it would be possible, but still I thought I would

ask the question.

 

Another random thought was how does the box know your holding the

6 button down to toggle between units rather than just store a preset.

 

I tried on my radio with the radio off, but thats the Loud/Normal Chime

selector.

Explain what the KNGM-1 is and provide a link to it and I may be able to help. I have experience with the GMIP-01 iPod interface but I don't know what the other one is.

Seems pretty chancy to me. I have the GMIP-01, but I don't use XM or Sirius. However, it seems to me that splicing two different devices into your setup back there would be setting yourself up for a confused headunit.

 

Superman TNT and I are the only two people I know of on this forum who have installed the GMIP-01, so I'm guessing you shouldn't hold your breath for someone on this forum who has installed both.

 

However, that said, I'd be interested in a report of your experience if you try to do this project. I don't have much interest in XM, but if Sirius continues to be the only game in town for satellite broadcasts of SEC sports, then I may be interested in subscribing someday.

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the late responce, just got back from the races. Stewart won which sucks but I still had lots of beer and had lots of fun . . .

 

Anyway to try and asnwer some questions for you . . .

 

I pretty much agree with Jon (Roden) that this is risky. I also prefer Sirus instead of XM and want to change (my truck came with factory XM). However with my iPod installed getting Sirus hooked up is now way, way down the priority list. Lets face it with just the iPod you get non stop, commercial free kick a$$ music for like . . . ever. The only reason to listen to Sirus or anything else would be new music you don't know about or sports and weather.

 

Anyway here are my thoughts on your questions . . .

 

I do think it might be possile to hook these boxes together in line. I looked the web site you references. The first pic of the cable "splicing" (actually placed in series with the) fatory HU cable. The GMIP has a similar such cable. In theory you could add 10 of these if you wanted to. So at least physically I think it would be possible.

 

Now as for the control, again I think it could work. Think about it this way, you're able to interface to either iPod or XM without any problem so why not iPod and Sirus? There is some kind of uController or uProcessor (u = micro) in the head unit. My guess is that there is some set of commands that your average person (and even most exerts) don't know exist. Like for instance if you press and hold the "6" preset, that could be a command to "set" (apply a high voltage) to some control line. That is why they need the relay. When you press and hold the "6" something in the head unit either directly controls the "XM relay" or is sending a message to their "digital Interface" unit to control the "XM relay". This really isn't that hard if you know what the bus commands and protocall is.

 

So, my guess is that it might work. I would probably try hooking the iPod cable in series first and the Sirus in line second. You would likely also have to change the relay from connecting to the Xm box to connecting to the Sirus box. There could also be an issue is both the new Sirus box and the iPod box count on using the same exact bus commands. For instance if the Sirus box counts on using "press and hold preset 6" to do something then you will get interference because both units use this for something different.

 

To know for sure if this will work I'd have to sit down and study the install directions and command set on both. However I think it could work.

 

Since I am a rocker I want Sirus and not XM. I have toyed with the idea of switching to Sirus but it is not a burning issue any more since I have the iPod working now.

 

I am pretty sure there is a way to get Sirus and your iPod working, even if you don't do it this way. I recall reading other posts (I think Black z71 might have done this) where they had XM, Sirus and iPod all working at the same time. There is more than one way to interface to Sirus and iPod, ie you don't have to use the GMIP-01. For some people the GMIP-01 is NOT the best way to go. This was discussed in other posts (by Roden).

 

Anyway, these are some quick thoughts on it. I can try and field other questions but I'm just taking educated guesses at what could be happening. I don't have direct knowledge.

Hello. I just wanted to provide an update. Sorry I didn't get back in July and thanks for all the responses!!

 

I would just like to confirm that you can use an GMIP-01 Ipod adapter and KNGM-1 Sirius adapter together!!!!

 

I finally won a GMIP-01 on Ebay for about $10.

 

I just finished the install and it works great. I don't know how I was able to get the radio back in especially with two boxes a relay and a pile of harnesses :chevy:

 

Changing from Ipod to Sirius takes a about 15 seconds, but I am assuming that's because its loading up the channel lineup.

 

The Ipod control it self seems a little clunky, ie sometimes when I push track up/down it goes two songs instead of one, but thats just the nature of the beast.

 

Also, I noticed you can unplug the IPod, navigate to a song, and then plug it back in, and it works just as well.

I am thinking that you can use one OR the other adapters, not both together. Contact Soundgate's Tech support, they will tell you. I have found them very knowlegable and helpful.

 

The KNGM1 will allow you to daisey chain a kenwood sirius tuner with a kenwood CD changer. The sirius tuner has the chaining ports and goes "in the middle". Per soundgates info...the HU will display Sirius at the Sirius 1 "band" (for presets on the HU) and the CD changer at Siruis 2 "band". This sounds like there may be 2 "bands" available - one for your sirius and one for your Ipod.??? WHo knows.

 

FWIW....I just installed the KNGM1 in my Yukon XL w/ Touch screen Nav. It works, but I was less than impressed with the display of info. I really thought the NAV video screen would handle the data better. NOTE: my complaints are about the way the HU handles the info...not the way the KNGM1 works.

 

I have become acustom to watching artist and song title info on the FM modulated SPORTSTER type reciever I have been using. It is obviously designed for sirius and handles the information very well. If song titles are long it even scrolls the type across the screen. As for sound, we all know the downfalls of FM modulation.

 

The GM HU limits text to 16 characters. Therefore, most song titles and some artists names are truncated. The HU is programmed to say XM1 and XM2...so even though I am listening to Sirius, it says XM on the screen. Also, some of the XM buttons still show on the screen and are greyed out - unuseable. All this is diasappointing.

 

The DIRECT sound is better tho so I will just grin and bear the display shortfalls.

I also have the GMIP-01 in my '05 Denali (Touch Screen Nav, XM, OnStar & 6 CD Changer) and frankly, I'm getting more disappointed by the day. When using Ipod, the GMIP-01 will often "reset" itself in the middle of a song. This can be particularly frustrating when I'm listening to song #238 of 600 on this playlist.

 

Hopefully a company will soon come out with a better way to integrate the Ipod to the GM factory radio. I'm seriously looking to add the KVH In-Motion Satellite TV and may just add an auxiliary audio input and control the Ipod that way.

I feel your pain. I have been having the same issues. I noticed that at seemingly random times the GMIP unit just resets the play list. Like you I have a LOT of music on there. It is a pain when you are that deep in your play list and it resets. I do not think Metra has a fully debugged and refined iPod interface yet. Their electronics seem a little flakely to me. Sometimes mine gets "stuck" in the reset condition and loops on it. I think their engineering dept needs to dig a little deeper and fine tune this thing.

 

There have also been a few times when I wanted to play one or two specific songs and can't. This is a pain also.

 

However I put up with this just to have the interaface to the iPod. 90% of the time it seems ok and I love just being able to let it do its thing and generate random music I love.

 

I have to believe that sooner or later the aftermarket guys will wake up and get a smooth iPod interface direct to HU's. Given GMs reaction time to things like this I am guessing that it may be 2015 or later before they figure this out.

      Based on what I can tell, yes.   As for updating it, its a mixed bag.  Updates do fix a lot of issues, but occasionally can create some oddities.  They do more good than harm though overall.     Here's what the most current one does and a  V171 Improvements Important: Improvements will vary by model, build configuration, system, and sales region. Not all vehicles have all features. OnStar and Wi-Fi may not work after remote start CarPlay may not automatically reconnect Part of the Driver Attention messaging screen may be in English even though the language is set to something else XM may not work After a dead 12V the radio may set to Arabic at each startup Bluetooth contacts might not be able to sync with the vehicle During an OTA the 12V battery may drain Customer might see a screen telling them to return to the dealer After changing the Wi-Fi SSID or password a device may not disconnect If a device is connected on the 2.4Ghz band, nothing will connect to the 5Ghz one, which could show as slow Wi-Fi speeds Customers might have noticed Wi-Fi dropping in certain areas and reconnecting later Customer might see the top of the screen blinking during Android Auto Android Auto may not connect CarPlay audio might momentarily cut out The "Add Phone" button may be grayed out The radio may not start up   V167 Most Notable Improvements:   Outside Air Temperature is incorrect. -You may see a popup message for Engine Shift.       Front End Rattle

      Looking for help troubleshooting a metallic like front end rattle. Figured I’d see if anyone had thoughts before I schedule an appointment with the dealer.   The rattle is fairly loud and occurs primarily when the front driver side wheel hits a bump, even fairly minor road seams. Sometimes does it when the passenger hits a bump but I don’t believe when the rear hits. Rattle still occurs when foot is pressing brake peddle so I think that rules out the caliper rattle I’ve read about. I’ve also checked the running boards and they are tight.   Most noticeable at slow speeds.    Any insight is appreciated.

      We try to make cruise the coast. It’s where our favorite casino is. I only want to spectate. Never took a car. Always had one to take. I belonged to a club once. Even when I used to drag raced. It was during test and tune. Probably because I’m not a night owl, party person.

      Good looking Olds, and TRX!   I haven't been into car shows either. I'm probably not a convert but I did push myself this year to attend a few select events to challenge some assumptions and try to experience car-based social clubs in a different way. I joined up with the local Hagerty group for some cars/coffee events, group drives. A month ago I showed my '94 Camaro I rescued last fall at Radwood. Had a good time, but, there was some sitting around with the car and that's the part of shows I don't enjoy as much. I prefer to be a spectator, walk the show, grab a burger, go home.   Radwood was the only era-limited event, but where it had strict model year limitations, it made it up in variety. Having Jason Camissa there was also a hoot.   Where I see old 50's car shows, doo-wop and winga dinga music stuff fading out, same with "only" vintage muscle clubs, it seems to be the activity-based clubs/events which are gaining strong popularity. Places where all cars and interests come together.
