remote start no cutting

I know the Directed Electronics (marketed under DEI, Stinger, Hornet, My Valet, Black Widow, and a bunch of other spider-type names) makes some plug and play components for security and remote start, but I personally would rather have the knowledge and confidence in a system that has been well soldered and taped (no scotchlocks, no crimp connectors).

Any electronic unit can only be as dependable as the connections, and plugs just have the possibility of too much give due to heat/cold, vibration, and other possibly harmful factors from the automotive environment.

If you want a remote start, the only way to go is Viper. Any other unit could be installed by some punk that has no clue what is going on. Viper only is installed by factory trained people and is the only system that I know of that works well with GM. I have heard of a lot of failures with other systems (like the one that fried my under dash wiring harness).

Do they have a model that works with the Duramax? It sure would be nice in the winter (or even now in the hot summer) to get that thing running before I got in.

Most of the new units have the option for the diesel motors. It has a delay for the glow plugs to warm up before it hits the starter. The Viper should have all of the options for your Duramax. Just remember though, quality costs money.

That's fine, I'd rather put a quality one on there (even it meant waiting longer to do it) than a piece of junk that may or may not work or even worse cause a meltdown under the dash. I'll have to take a look at the Viper's. Is it possible to use the factory FOB or do you need a new one?

The Viper alarm is sweet. The remotes range is pretty d**n good indeed. The remote tells you if the car is armed, if its running, and if it was tripped what sensor was the culprit. Not cheap, but once again...you get what you pay for.

Sounds pretty nice to me then... I know some of the remote starters also have timers on them and a few even have temp alerts so if it gets too cold it will start it every so often etc...

The viper has a 10 min. timer. It cuts out after 10 min. if you haven't entered the vehicle and put the key in. You can keep the alarm armed while warming up and even if you didn't as soon as you apply the break the engine will shut off as a security feature.

Any of the DEI units are quality units. For the Duramax, I think some of the remote start units have a turbo cool down feature so you can leave your truck running after you get done driving to let the turbo cool down.

I have also heard good things about the Compustar remote start systems.
