Radiator fluid change

Is there anything else to do other than drain the radiator and put in the correct mix of coolent/distilled water? I would like to get all of the old coolent out if possible. Thanks.

You could buy a flush kit from your local auto supply place. This will basically be a T connector you put in your heater hose. This allows you to hook up a garden hose and run fresh water thru your engine until it is clear. Then drain the radiator and refill. When you refill you have to put more Anti-freeze then water because what is left in the engine is 100% water.

 

This is a pretty simple thing to do. There are even some solvents you can put in and run for 10-15 minutes before the flush to break stuff loose.

thanks for the reply. I'm don't want to use a flush kit like that because I have a well where I live and the water is full of iron and minerals. I don't think using my water would be good for the radiator.

Your water should be fine if you drain everything including the block. I made a flusher using some PVC and garden hose fittings. Attach the spray side to the upper radiator hose. Attach a hose to the upper radiator connector. Slowly spray water through (reverse poppet thermostat so water will flow) until it runs clear. I even catch the old in a big bucket for proper disposal. Close everything up and run the fornt/rear heater and then flush again.. When done, open radiator and block drains. Close, add half of cooling capacity of Dexcool, top off with potable water or distilled water. Run engine up to temp to bleed and recheck level.

 

Then again, you could just go to a quick lube and have them flush it. I like doing it myself because I enjoy working on cars and I want to make sure it is done correctly as I usually keep my vehicles a long time.
