What About the 4.8L?

Recommended Posts

It seems that there are very few 4.8L owners on this forum who have much to say about their engines. I for one love mine. It gets great gas mileage and its just right for pulling around my 1500 ECSB 4x4 Sierra. I don't tow and my truck is just another family car.

My Jimmy has minimal miles (3000) so I would like to hear from some of you who have put a few more miles on the odometer or your 4.8's. Do you love 'em? Do you hate 'em? How are they holding up? Is anyone experiencing any issues? What's the expected life?...

Thanks,

I have the 4.8 in my ext cab truck with around 96,000 miles and no problems. I have used it for towing and mild off roading. I have no complaints with it. It will get up and go and will also get decent mileage.

Love mine too. . .doesn't suck up the gas like a big truck should. And at 94,000 miles - I have NO complaints!

The 4.8 in my 2001 Sierra 2WD Work truck really struggles to hold highway speeds with a 40 ft extendable ladder on the roof, the 2000, and 2001 Silverados from my company which have 5.3s in them don't have that issue. Other then that it does great in the city! Sounds alot like my my 5.3 in my Silverado but revs a bit higher.

I've got almost 5,000 miles on mine and love it. I use it for a commuter and have found that I can easily do 20 mpg as long as I keep it under 60 mph. I'm sure I will see a minor drop in the winter when I use 4 wheel drive but even then it'll get better mileage than driving a 8.1....of course, I wouldn't want to pull the same thing with mine that I'd pull with an 8.1. It's a great little engine but isn't well suited for pulling heavy trailers. Fantastic engine that has plenty of power to pass yet gets fantastic mileage for a V-8.

I've got an '03 Ext cab with the 4.8 and just over 25k on the clock and no problems whatsoever. I've just had a wait4meperfomance tune in mine for about two weeks and mileage seems to be up but I won't know until I fill up again. I just blazed this Furd today who jumped me off the light. When I laid the hammer down, it chriped the tires during the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift. Totally smoked his a#@! :nopity:

I have a 2000 Ext 4WD that I bought new and I love it. Am having a starting issue right now at 86,000 miles, but I am pretty sure it is related to the retarded passlock system.

I regularly tow a 19' I/O openbow boat, and more often then not the bed is filled cab high with camping stuff. I have no problems at all, and the truck performs just fine. I also have a 2001 Suburban with the 5.3, but am glad I went with the 4.8 in the truck, as I really don't need the extra power.

When I ordered the truck originally, I almost went for the 5.3 because I figured the resale value would be higher, but now that the truck is paid for and has performed so well, I don't see me parting with it any time soon.

Glad to see there are others who love their 4.8s as well!

I love mine as a daily drive but having recently traded a V6 for it, I was surprised that the V6 had more low end torque that the 4.8. Even when towing a small

trailer, I have to rev the 4.8 up much higher than the V6 to get it into it's "powerband."

:nopity: Holy Cow...didnt expect to see someone else from Maine. Where in Maine are you at parkercl? I am up near Augusta.

Anyways...I have a 2003 Sierra ECSB 4x4 with the 4.8 and have no complaints from it. I have already put on just under 10,000 miles in the four months that i have owned it.

I average about 19.5 mpg from commuting 50 miles to work one way. I recently just installed a tune from Jesse (waitformeperformance.com) and am awaiting better fuel economy results.

I have just over 62,000 miles on it. Change the oil reguallary at 3K miles and have already done the tranny, transfer case and front diff fluids.

Am happy with the truck. No complaints.

I have a 2004 Tahoe with a 4.8L motor...thought I would like it but it's just what I need as my truck is 90% commuter. I drive 40 miles one way to work and am getting 19.5, 19.9 mpg pretty routinely.

I don't plan on towing anything significant, but it's nice to know that I can tow a few g's if I had to.

Motor has 4500 miles on it and using the GM OLM system to manage my OCI....

I had a 4.3L blazer and ran it trouble free for 170K and am hoping to run this one a long time too....

Has a 3.73 rear end and this gives me enough low end pickup for what I need.

I commute on the weekdays then play on the weekends so this motor is perfect for me. Though if my truck came with a 5.3/6.0 you wouldn't see a tear in my eye.

99 4.8L with 132,000 miles.

I only get 15mpg. I don't think it's ever done better than 16mpg highway. When the temps are <45 degrees out, it idles poorly when cold thanks to the famous GM lower intake manifold leaks.

Other than that, it's an ok engine, but I'd take a 6.0L in a heartbeat.

P1416 Diagnostic aids

Low Air System volume may cause a DTC1416 or an intermittent complaint.

Also check for the following conditions:

-Pinched, kinked or restricted AIR pipes, hoses or fittings.

-Leaks, holes, loose fittings or hoses.

-Restricted or obstructed AIR pump inlet.

An air supply hose that is melted before the check valve could indicate exhaust gas

back-flow past the check valve.

An intermittent may be caused by any of the following conditions:

-A poor connection.

-Rubbed through wire insulation.

-A broken wire inside the insulation.

C0265 Diagnostic aids

DTC C0265 usually sets because of an open relay coil or non-closable relay contacts. The relay is located within the EBCM. The relay is not serviceable.

If you need more info, e-mail me and I'll send you a scan of the page from the HELM manual.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
