aligning the headlights

I changed my headlights out to projector beams. Before I started I turned on my lights to shine on the garage door and used tape on the door to outline the brightest areas. After changing the lights I aligned them to these taped areas on the door. I understand the light pattern is very different but while driving the lights just don't look right. Is there a "book" procedure I can use that doesn't require some fancy expensive tool?
