Removing spark plug wires on 5.3L

I want to change the plugs in my 2003 Yukon's 5.3L but cannot pull the wires off the plugs. I have changed plugs in a variety of cars and boats, but for the life of me I can't budge the wires to come off from the plug end. These are the originals as the truck has reached 100,00 + miles. I'm assuming they just pull off, like normal, or is there a trick with the Vortec? The plug end has a metal heat shield around it which doesn't let me get to the plug.

I just did mine on my 2000 Yukon last night, I had to pull them hard as crap, but they came loose. One of them I had to use a Large Flat head under the L on the boot, as a prybar to break it loose. It worked, but they are a pain to get off.

I now have lots of scrapes on my arms today from doing these, lol.
