1001 Horsepower

This is a very neat car. To me the way VW engineered this car is quite amazing.

It uses a W aspiration. This means it has four complete cylinder banks all bound by one crank shaft. It looks kinda like two Vs tiled at 45 degree angles.

The tranny is a 7 speed that uses a double wet cluctch system. Thats the kinda trannys you'd see on Formula 1 cars.

Good stuff.

According to Supercars.net, in 2002 Bugatti created the Veyron 16/4 Concept with the W-16 and had 1000.1 hp reported. This may be the same car, just refined and made .9 hp more powerful this time around. The 1992 Vector WX3 used a turbocharged Oldsmobile Aurora V8 to hit the 1k hp mark. SC.net also reports a 2005 Hennessey-induced "Venom 1000" Viper SRT-10 capable of 1k in pony-power and 1.1k in torque. Click here for the page: Viper Venom 1000. I agree with OUMike in the process of this car. The W-16 configuation is a truely outstanding piece of modern engine technology. Something like this, if I'm not mistaken: \||/

And the 7-speed gearbox perhaps?:

1 3 5 7

2 4 6 R

Hey, it was the best I could do with what I had. I'm not Da Vinci of the PC keyboard.

The Venom cars are impressive to a degree. I actually live in Houston, TX where John Hennessey does these cars. Its knowledge among the tuner companies that he oes very very poor business. When I was about 15 or so I become very interested in the ZR-1 Corvette and joined the www.zr1.net to learn all I could. There were a couple of guys on the board that shared horror stories about how deadlines for completion were never met, cars were even wrecked or damaged in his shop.

Thats about right on the W-16. What is impressive about the car to me is how it utilizes the quad-turbo system. The turbochargers are setup so they spool at different times much like a 911 Turbo. This way there is virtually no turbo lag. The main reason for using the W configuration is to use 16 cylinders without massive displacement. Essentially it enables a tighter package.

Actually this car (like most of these newer performance cars) uses a F1 style paddle shifter. The consol lever is mainly for swapping between D and R.

A while back I discovered this car and became pretty interested in it. www.howstuffworks.com has a great artcile on it and how it operates, and Bugatti's manufacture page has some great short clips.

Much like a 911 turbo, but with the addition of two more turbos?

Thanks for the info, Mike. Very cool.:cheers:

I actually read in a magazine yesterday in the doctors office that this car actually has a horsepower gauge...how cocky is that? The figure quoted by Bugatti is actually a german mesurement or 1001 PS. This is about 987 American HP.

I woundn't say that's cocky, I'd say that it's a proving point to how powerful the car is. I wonder if they have the onboard equipment in-car to measure that power like how they do at a speed shop, such as on "HorsePower TV". A full setup of gauges and diagnostic equipment right there in the comfort of the drivers' seat. Wow.

I can see it at the local service shop:

"Oil psi up"

"Temp normal"

"Trans temp cool"

"Horsepower through the goddamn roof" :chevrolet:

So it's not really at 1k, huh? Still, 987hp is nothing to sneeze at.

Oh, and I pulled some power formulae from my profile notepad for anyone to compare and contrast numbers.

1 hp=746 watts or 0.746 kilowatts.

horsepower to watts, multiply by 746.

watts to horsepower, multiply by 0.00134.

horsepower to kilowatts, multiply by 0.746.

kilowatts to horsepower, multiply by 1.34.

61 cubic inches=1 liter/1000 cubic centimeters (1000cm³).

liters to cubic inches, multiply by 61.

cubic inches to liters, divide by 61.

kg-m to lb-ft, multiply by 7.23.

lb-ft to kg-m, multiply by 0.13.

Nm to lb-ft, multiply by 0.737.

lb-ft to Nm, multiply by 0.737.

I said cocky, but I really thought it was cool. I thought it was one of the neatest things I'd seen in a while. The gauge would show the increasing hp as the car increased in speed. The arctile mentioned that only like 266 hp was required for 155 mph. Just emagine what the car is capable WOT. It also mentioned that in 7th gear WOT the car got about 4 mpg. ouch...

I'm talkin' about the Nov issue of Automobile mag if anyone is interested. The main artcile that caught my eye was ZO6 vs. GT vs. Viper but I didn't have a chance to read that. Whadya know the one time I actually don't mind waiting in the doctors office they speed me right through.

Ok I know this is a different Bugati but this is a cool site none the less.

Yea...I been there. That site makes me sick haha. EB110 SS one of my favorite cars. I believe the EB cars use the 60 valve V12s. I think they too are quad-turbocharged. For a short time that was the "Worlds Fastest Car" at like 221 I beileve.
