10k service

Sorry for not rtfm(reading the ####ing manual) but was wondering what these newer trucks call for at the 10k mark.I could of swore i either read it or heard it from a service manager that both diffs,tranny and trasfer case fluids should be drained and replaced at 10k.

 

Are they just trying to pry some cash out of me or are these things that i should do to get any metal or foriegn objects out of the break in oils?I plan on keeping this truck for sometime so if some of the techs on here seems to agree that this is a smart thing to do i will setup the appointment soon.

I think you will find that the general consensus on this site will be that you should do those things around 30K. Here is the service schedule I have followed so far:

 

Every 3K - Change oil, filter, and lube front end

 

Every 5K - Rotate / balance tires. You have to get lifetime balance and rotation from a tire shop or else it will be expensive to do it this often.

 

Every 15K - replace engine air filter

 

Every 30K - flush tranny, replace fluid in front and rear diffs, replace fluid in the transfer case, replace fuel filter, replace cabin air filters (2005 model will not have this), clean throttle body (easy to do, do a search on this site)

 

100K service: flush coolant, replace spark plugs / wires

 

Other things to keep in mind would be the PCV valve (easy DIY), wiper blades, maintaining proper tire pressure, etc.

 

Something else I will probably do around 100K (my truck will be around 5 yrs. old at that time) is have all my hoses and belts replaced. This is not really a maintenance item but taking a pro-active approach to these items might save you from having your truck break down on you after that point. Also, I will probably replace the shocks / struts at some point too around the 100K mark. I know my ride quality can be improved. Oh yeah - I have had the transmission flushed at 30K and 60K. I think at 90K I will have the filter replaced as well as having it flushed. Just dropping the pan and replacing the filter does not get all the old fluid out. You have to flush it out to empty the lines.

 

Other things that I have not mentioned that I am not sure when to do would be when to flush the power steering. My power steering pump was just replaced at 80K under warranty so I am not worried about it. My water pump was just replaced too so I won't be doing that 100K fluid flush.

 

Anything that I am missing?

You should have the wheel lugnuts torqued to proper spec when rotating/balancing the tires. I would also change the brake fluid every two years, and change the spark plugs at 50K miles.
